Advanced driver training course

This training is run by the Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM) and is delivered by local groups of trained volunteers.

The training helps drivers to identify areas for improvement in their driving skills and coaches them to improve and pass the advanced driver test. Passing this test may help you access cheaper insurance and reduce the chances of being involved in a road traffic collision.

The part-funding of this scheme is a trial supported by Portsmouth City Council and there are a limited number of spaces available which must be taken up by the end of March 2013.

To get involved interested you will need to sign up via email ( roadsafety@portsmouthcc.gov.uk) or phone 023 9268 8262 by 15 February 2013. You will then be sent a form to complete assessing your suitability which you must return to the council by 28 February 2013.

Please note: All participants taking part will need to have access to a car, either their own or someone else’s with the correct insurance permissions.

Process and conditions:

  • Participants will need to call the IAM to arrange their share of the payment (£70) for the training, this will be paid directly to the IAM. The council will also pay the IAM in this way.
  • Participants will arrange their training with their local IAM group around their own availability.
  • Participants will be invited to and must attend a young driver workshop run by the council to cover issues faced by their age bracket i.e. mobile phone use, drink driving, distraction.
  • Participants will be required to complete a personal record throughout their training and submit this to the council via email. These records will be confidential and used to measure the success of the training.
  • On completion of their training, participants will be required to respond to two short surveys, at three and six months after the completion of their training.
