Professor June Purvis will give an illustrated talk about women’s suffrage in Britain at the University of Portsmouth on Wednesday March 6.
The talk will focus on the struggle for women’s suffrage in Britain between 1865 and 1928, when women in Britain were granted the right to vote. It will explore the campaigns of the suffrage societies, especially the suffragette movement, founded by Emmeline Pankhurst in 1903.

Professor Purvis is Emeritus Professor of women’s and gender history at the University and has published extensively on the women’s suffrage movement. Her recent book Emmeline Pankhurst: a biography (2002) received critical acclaim. She is also the editor of the internationally renowned journal Women’s History Review and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
Professor Purvis’ current research interests include women’s autobiographies and the suffragette movement in Edwardian Britain, including a biography of Christabel Pankhurst, the chief organiser of the Women’s Social and Political Union.
