Changes to Saturday Department Open Day and University Open Day parking procedures

In order to improve our parking provision for these key recruitment events the following allocation of car parks has been agreed between Estates and the Marketing and Communications Department:

Visitor only car parks

  • Melbourne Place
  • University House
  • Ravelin
  • Nuffield
  • Eldon
  • Milldam
  • Anglesea Rear
  • Portland
  • St George’s

Staff only car parks

  • St Andrew’s Court
  • Anglesea Front
  • Gun House
  • Ravelin House
  • William Beatty
  • Rotunda
  • Lion Gate
  • Park
  • Wiltshire
Security staff and signage will be at the entrance to car parks identifying whether they are intended for the use of visitors or staff.

Other smaller car parks that are not listed are available for use, but will not be advertised due to their size and difficulty in signposting, or issues with accessibility.

Portsmouth City Council have been made aware of all dates.  No PCC staff will be on campus checking visitor car parks for permits during our events.  However staff vehicles will be required to display valid permits.

  1. This is ridiculous. Did those who made this decision consider that academic staff give up their weekends for ABSOLUTELY NO PAYMENT WHATSOEVER in order to staff Open Days? Not only does the University take this completely for granted, now it makes our travel arrangements more awkward in order for us to do the University a favour. I think it’s called insult to injury.

    Please reconsider.

    • Thank you for your comment. This parking plan was set up with the Estates department and we hope it will make the situation easier, partly in response to feedback from a number of staff who were unable to find parking in University car parks on open days last year.

By allocating several car parks on each event as staff-only parking, we’re hoping that staff will in fact, find it easier to secure a parking space. At last year’s events, every single University car park was advertised for open day visitors to park in, which meant staff were struggling to find a space.

We will review the success of this scheme after we pilot it but it was necessary to set up a managed scheme now that our car parks are managed by Portsmouth City Council.

We are very grateful to all staff, both academic and support staff, who give up their weekends to help make these student recruitment events as successful as they are – we appreciate all the time and work you put in. Please contact us on opendays@port.ac.uk if you would like to discuss further.

  2. A volunteer has to purchase a permit?
What happens if they don’t have one?

    • Any staff who are coming in to work on the weekend events via car should already own a parking permit , as I understand that all members of staff who park in the University car parks should already be subscribed to the University’s parking permit deduct from salary scheme.

However, if there are any members of staff driving in who would usually not park in the University car parks as they use other modes of transport during the week, I would encourage them to email us on opendays@port.ac.uk to let us know of this, and we may be able to arrange for a scratchcard parking permit to be provided to them in advance.

      • i presume that the scratchcards for any volunteer staff who drive in for events will be issued free. It seems fair if people are working at the University outside their normal hours, and for the good of it.

        • We anticipate there should be little demand for us to issue car parking scratchcards to staff members, as anyone who uses a car for work should already be paying for this from the deduction from salary scheme.

However, as stated above, if you do not use your car for work and will only be using it to come in for these events, please email your details to us on opendays@port.ac.uk and yes, we will issue a scratchcard which the Marketing Department will pay for.

  3. Does this include disabled drivers?

    • Any disabled drivers will be able to park in our disabled parking spaces located in any of the car parks around campus, as well as following Portsmouth City Council’s advice about where they can use their blue badge around the city which is available at:

      http://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/living/13430.html

We are unfortunately unable to reserve parking spaces for any visitors on open days.
