New waste management scheme aims to achieve 70% recycling rate

From April, new bins will make it easier for you to recycle your waste and compost leftover food in new food caddies.

The new waste management scheme means that there will no longer be both general waste bins and recycling bins – there will be just one bin and a food caddy for food waste.

Our waste contractor (Biffa) is able to sort and recover all recyclables from mixed office/classroom waste, with the exception of food.  Materials that aren’t recyclable go to a waste-to-energy plant so that all waste is safely disposed of.

In Richmond and King Henry buildings the trial of this scheme proved so successful that recycling rates jumped from 40per cent to 70per cent.

The new bins will be installed during the Easter holiday period starting on 2 April, building by building.  You can see when your building will change to the new scheme by visiting our recycling pages.

If you have a query once your building’s bins have been changed, see if your question is covered in the Greenportsmouth recycling web page. If you can’t find the answer, then please email us at Greenportsmouth@port.ac.uk.
