What is this about?
The Department of Sport and Exercise Science and RNLI have been running a research programme looking at beach lifeguarding techniques. We need your help with the latest stage of this valuable project, which will help train lifeguards of the future.
What is needed?
We need to recreate a busy beach scene and are looking for people to spend a few hours on the sand or in the water alongside Bournemouth Pier on Saturday 18 May 2013 from 2.00pm – 5.00pm.
What will happen?
The scene will be recorded on video whilst a number of ‘hazardous behaviours’ are acted out. In the water these might include someone pretending to drown, a surfer entering the swimming area and on the beach, activities like playing football and noisy groups.
What do I need to do?
Let us know if you think you can attend. On the day all you have to do is act naturally and enjoy yourself whilst the scripted behaviours happen around you. If you are happy to, we might ask you to join in with one of the ‘behaviours’, e.g. playing football, but you are under no obligation – primarily we need people to simply make the beach look busy.
How long will it take?
We have allowed between 2.00pm and 5.00pm on Saturday 18 May, however we only need to make two 20 minute videos, so it should take less time than this.
If you think that you may be able to attend and help us and the RNLI, please email Jenny Page (jenny.page@port.ac.uk) for more information.
