Thanks for your comments - it would be good to pick up on your points when we meet later in the month. If possible please complete our online survey.

The online survey isn't working properly. I've raised this issue with our online developers and Elearn, and they were not able to advise me who I should contact about this - hence this message.
An error message occurs whenever you try to submit the form, which says that there needs to be a response to question 2 (no matter how many boxes have been ticked for question 2). This error occurs in different web browsers and for different colleagues.

I have been running a new first year online portfolio/careers unit this year. Rather than Mahara, which the university used for its online portfolio, I have suggested that the students might use Google sites (or any other website host they wish). The assessment marking has just started so too early to comment on how well this has worked, though early indications are quite promising. Of over 400 students taking the unit only 12 did not submit a site on time. There are details of what the students had to do for their portfolio here: https://sites.google.com/site/uopportfolio/

There was also some additional work on Moodle and a Moodle course to support this.

Apart from the ease of using the Google sites, another major advantage this approach seems to have over Mahara is that the sites are 'owned' by the students, they will still have them when they leave university. I am considering using Mahara for the action plan parts of this unit next year, but only if it is significantly improved - so it is as easy to use as Google sites.

1. As I was using an on-line portfolio before the advent of your e-portfolio the students are confused as to where to put/keep things, which can cause a real headache for assessed artefacts

2. The e-portfolio can be shared with other students hence opportunities for plagiarism are increased

3. Unlike the use of a moodlle wiki there are no tools for report generation, relative diff or generation history.

All in all I cant see any benefit for us as academics in their use when compared to the similar facilities in moodle.
