The University has risen eight places from 63 to number 55 in The Sunday Times Good University Guide, published on Sunday 22 September. The rise places Portsmouth in the table’s top five modern English universities.
The guide is published annually and ranks all UK universities according to a number of criteria including student satisfaction, research quality, graduate prospects, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, service and facilities spend and university dropout rates. Together with other national guides, it is used by potential undergraduate students, both national and international, to help select their future university.
The Sunday Times referred to the University’s rise in the rankings being in part due to another strong performance in the National Student Survey (NSS). In 2013 student satisfaction at the University of Portsmouth rose to 88 per cent, placing Portsmouth in the top 30 of mainstream universities in England. It marked the seventh year running that Portsmouth students rated their university above the UK national average, which this year stands at 85 per cent.
The increase in The Times Good University league tables follows the University’s rise in The Guardian University Guide to number 48 in the rankings in June 2013.
The University’s Vice-chancellor, Professor Graham Galbraith, said that this most recent improvement marks another positive step for the University’s overall position in University league tables.
“Love them or loathe them, the league tables are an external representation of a university’s calibre to some of our most important audiences and a move up the rankings is a reason for celebration.
“League tables are just one measure of an institution’s quality, but they help demonstrate to our potential students that selecting Portsmouth as a place to study is an excellent choice. I would still always encourage young people choosing a University to come and visit us at one of our open days and see for themselves the kind of institution we are.”
The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2014 marks the first time The Times and The Sunday Times have amalgamated their league tables into one guide.
Last year the University of Portsmouth was placed among the top 400 universities in the world and the top modern university in the United Kingdom by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
