Four UoP graduates from the course BSc (Hons) Television and Broadcasting, have embarked on a career launch of a lifetime thanks to an industry link with leading broadcast solutions service provider Gearhouse Broadcast.
The graduates, Glenn Smith, Max De Jong, Aaron Sampson, and Benn Lapper, flew out to Doha, Qatar on January the 3rd 2013, their mission: Help prepare a newly fitted Al Jazeera television studio to begin broadcasting live news to 40,000,000 viewers.
TV and Broadcasting course leader Charlie Watts is thrilled with the graduate opportunity. Charlie states “We must be doing something right at the University of Portsmouth, because this is another great example of students finishing a specialist degree course, and getting rewarded with excellent job opportunities”.
Charlie is keen to add that these career developments are due to a particular mindset and approach taken at both school and faculty level. “The School of Creative Technologies is about connecting with industry on a meaningful level, and it has taken years of work to develop trust with companies such as Gearhouse Broadcast. This company in particular has been fantastic in their support of helping to get students ready for industry, and they have already loaned very expensive industry kit to help give students the best opportunities possible for additional teaching and learning”.
The graduates are now coming up the the half-way mark of their present employment as camera operators in the 24/7 newsroom. Working in shifts Glenn, Max, Aaron and Ben are learning to use multi-million pound equipment to broadcast live around the World.
We wish all concerned the very best!
