Searle Kochberg, Principal Lecturer, Creative Technologies is part of the steering committee for a new project called Rainbow Jews. The project aims to record and showcase Jewish Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) history from the 1950s to today.
The project, led by Su Knan at Montagu Centre London, received a grant of nearly £60,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund in order to document the voices and experiences of Jewish LGBT people in the UK. That money will be used to record an oral history and create an archive.
Liberal Judaism has recruited London-based volunteers from ALL backgrounds to help with this landmark project.
UoP Creative Technology students will be involved this summer and autumn – Searle has arranged placements for them filming documentary segments for the project website and the London show next year.
There are currently 6 UoP volunteers from TVFP, and Searle is specifically interested in students participating who are AV production specialists. Contact Searle on Searle.kochberg@port.ac.uk.
Student volunteers will be required for summer 2013 (May through Sept) to film and edit interviews with LGBTQ pioneers in Jewish life in London, although there is the possibility that will extend to cover Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow. Students will be responsible for all aspects of the filming including lighting, sound recording and editing into 5 minute interviews. Students will be organised into groups of 3, each responsible for 3 films.
The Project organisers will cover basic travel and food, but students need to arrange accommodation in London. All the students involved will receive credit for their contribution.
The films will be to be added to project website and will be screened at a exhibition in spring 2014 at the London School of Economics.
We will keep you informed as the project progresses.
