Every year final year students from the BA (Hons) Drama and Performance and BA (Hons) English and Drama courses take part in ‘Forming a Company’, a unit that asks students to set up a company, resulting in projects ranging from small-scale commercial set-ups to ‘theatre in education’ companies and everything in between.
Black Hat theatrical events are one of the companies and their aim is to create fun and unique events with a theatrical twist. It’s the brainchild of creative team Hazel Mallinson, Jade Poolman, Kirstie Patterson, Jade Arden, Charli Henley and Philip Barker studying Drama and Performance.
Inspired by Portsmouth’s thriving vintage scene Black Hat have chosen to put a 1920’s spin on their first event which will be a fully interactive 1920’s style Murder Mystery dinner at the beautiful Chambers Restaurant and Lounge in Southsea. The tickets are £30 which includes a top class three course dinner provided by The Chambers and an evening of songs, thrills and spills as the mystery unfolds. Diners are encouraged to fully invoke the theme by dressing to impress in 1920’s style outfits. As well as this each guest will be given their own character for the night which is a great chance for the more theatrical amongst us to throw themselves into the evening.
The Black Hat team is made up of dancers, singers and actors as well as production and events enthusiasts and they wanted to use their strong backgrounds in each area to really create an event that not only transports its audience to another time but enjoy a performance that invites them to be part of the action.
The students relied on fund-raising and donations to make sure the event goes ahead and held fund-raiser events as well as setting up a donations page on crowd funding site sponsume.com. Donators are rewarded with thanks on social networking sites for a donation of £5, a personal letter for a donation of £10, a mention on their website for a donation of £20 and if anyone is generous enough to donate £30 they will receive all of the previous benefits plus their name will also be written into the script for the evening!

Some companies from previous years have been so successful they have continued to operate after the students graduate, so this offers a good route into a career for the students. An example of this can be seen in this graduate profile of The Three Belles.
