University of Portsmouth 2nd year BA (Hons) Contemporary Fine Art students’ end of year exhibition is held on a trail in Southsea. The show consists of 17 different artists, all with unique styles, exhibiting their work in amongst the windows of Albert Road.
This spring shoppers in Southsea will see work by second year students in the windows of 16 businesses in order to bring contemporary art to a wider community audience.
The ‘Albert Road Trail’ was the idea of students who wanted to exhibit their work in a community setting and forge links with local businesses. Heather Dubois, whose work deals with the personal challenges which often surround human emotions says “I feel that it is important to have as wide and varied audience as possible, as everyone is at sometime or another affected by emotional issues.”
There are 17 artists taking part, who are currently producing a wide variety of work ranging from painting and sculpture to photography and installation. The project will allow them to show it in a diverse range of venues including the Kings Theatre and Parmiter’s antique shop. Traders in Albert Road have been keen to build up an inclusive and creative vibe and it is hoped that the Albert Road Trail can benefit from the success and popularity of events like Love Albert Road Day and Southsea Fest.
Alain LeRay, owner of hairdressers LeRays, said: “When the university students approached me, I was very keen. It’s a really good thing for Albert Road and I cannot wait.” Rick Christie, owner of Head Hairdressing for Men, echoed these sentiments by saying: “The work is going to look superb and it is great to think people will be coming to Albert Road to look at the art.”
Curatorial advisor, Denise Callender said “Although this is a group exhibition, I am very much looking forward to seeing how each piece works in a shop window; it will be as though each artist is having a mini solo show but connecting to a larger supportive network of artists and traders”.
The Albert Road Trail is an ideal concept in a community setting whilst forging links with its local businesses. This event will be an opportunity to meet the artists involved and join in to celebrate the event.
The exhibition will run from Monday 13th May to Sunday 19th May 2013, with a celebration private view on Wednesday 15th May that will begin at The Loft (above the King’s pub) from 6pm, with regular guided tours on which you can find out more about each exhibit from some of the artists. Tours will finish at the Wine Vaults where the celebration event culminates with an evening of entertainment, a raffle with fantastic prizes and the chance to socialise over a tipple and a bite to eat.
