Barry Zee and Peter Missen, UoP MA Fine Art students, are presenting ‘Foreign Bodies’ at the new White Elephant gallery in Eastney, Portsmouth. Peter is currently researching the aesthetics of binary based codes for his MA in Fine Art. Barry is currently researching political economy visual symbols through photography for his MA in Fine Art degree.
Peter’s work is a coupling to an already awarded MSc in Artificial Intelligence gained prior to a career in computer messaging and queueing systems.
Work for this show at White Elephant has an underpinning of a “foreign” and as yet unpublished binary code system created by Peter. The “code” combines Latin characters with Japanese katakana phonemes. The number three and triptychs prove to be a strong base for many of Peter’s artefacts.
Barry’s ‘Liberty of Appearing’ work ‘endeavours to make us aware of the value of ordinary people’. In this exhibition he pieces together images of people at work or generally going about their daily life. His images echoes his statement ‘You don’t have to look too far to see that the world is run by two factions of privileged people’ which answers his research question’Have you ever wondered why poor people are poor?’.
