The University of Portsmouth, Aspex Gallery and six FE colleges/sixth form colleges are jointly inviting Creative and Cultural Industries students to work with a commissioned artist for New Creatives 2013, an artist-led exhibition project aiming to inspire FE students and exploring ‘Does making things make us human?’. Please note this is an unpaid, voluntary work initiative.

What’s in it for you?

Three selected CCI students will each work as ‘buddies’ with a commissioned professional artist who will lead the students in two FE colleges each, from the period September 2012 – May 2013. The participating colleges are South Downs, Highbury, Gosport, Havant, St Vincent’s, Fareham and Chichester.

The external influence of working with a professional artist, gallery, Faculty member and FE college will build your confidence and provide professional practice. You will experience how creative professionals work in education and learn how a ‘creative brief’ can be delivered in a wider cultural context, at the same time as learning personal skills such as negotiation, organisation and communication skills.

The project will give you the opportunity to make your own creative blog in support of the artists which will be linked to from the New Creatives website www.newcreatives.org.uk

What’s the job?

If selected you will be asked to:

Attend a launch event on 22 October 2012 at Aspex Gallery.

Liaise closely with one of the commissioned professional artists on your availability.

Shadow or buddy the artist on two visits to FE colleges, observing, recording and assisting where necessary.

Remain in contact with the CCI Faculty Promotions Manager as a link between colleges, artists and the University.

Record your experience as part of your professional practice as a student creative practitioner.

Act as an ‘ambassador’ for the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries in a key regional cultural project.

Attend the exhibition preview at Aspex on Friday 8 March 2013.

How can I participate?

Please send a 200-300 word ‘expression of interest’ plus your CV, including your contact details by email to denise.callender@port.ac.uk.

Deadline for submissions: Monday 8 October 2012.

Contact

For more information visit www.newcreatives.org.uk or contact denise.callender@port.ac.uk or 023 9284 5197.

What did last year’s buddies say?

‘I have really enjoyed my time working on New Creatives. It has been a completely new experience for me to gain an insight into the workings of both colleges and a gallery, and also to buddy Patti Gaal-Holmes. I have particularly enjoyed helping the FE students to develop their initial ideas, and to provide advice from my own position as a third year Illustration student at university. Patti has also made the experience thoroughly enjoyable, and has been very helpful in telling me about her professional work and also allowing me to visit her studio at Artspace. All in all, this process has been beneficial to me in many ways, and I am looking forward to the exhibition at Aspex Gallery!’ Katie Beltrami, UoP BA (Hons) Illustration, ‘buddy’ to commissioned artist

“Working with the New Creatives project has been one of the greatest opportunities as a young artist so far. I have engaged with a variety of different people, of different ages and abilities. It has been interesting and fun working so closely with Dawn. The project allowed me an insight into how other artists work and how to encourage and nurture the ideas and creative possibilities of younger minds within the FE workshops.” Laura Fazackerley, UoP BA (Hons) Photography, ‘buddy’ to commissioned artist

Dysarticulate encourages people of all ages to become an ‘artist for a day’ by creating and planting flags made from recycled book pages. Dysarticulate is influenced by Jon’s dyslexia and his love of hidden meaning. There is a DIY kit available to download to help you make your own flags and bunting. This is available on the University website here:

http://www.port.ac.uk/departments/faculties/cci/air/projects/dysarticulate3/

A film about the ideas behind Dysarticulate can be viewed here: http://vimeo.com/24215077

Information about the Torch relay in Portsmouth and a link to a pdf version of the route the torch will take can be viewed here: http://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/London2012/torch-relay.html

Jon’s Dysarticulate (Flags) project is now in it’s third year, and this year has concentrated on involving schools with flag making events. Thousands of children have been involved in the project, and you can see photographs and further information on the Dysarticulated Schools website here: http://www.dysarticulatedschools.org/

Congratulations to alumni Rebecca Pearson and Claire Salter (BA (Hons) Media Studies and Entertainment Technology) found out recently that footage they filmed and submitted for Ridley Scott’s Britain in a Day has been selected for the final cut, which is due to be shown on the BBC this summer.

Their success with Britain in a Day builds upon success they had last year with ‘Life in a Day’ (also Ridley Scott), when although they did not make it into the actual film, they made it into the DVD montages and were listed on the credits.

Rebecca told us ”We’re over the moon that not only has our footage been included in a second Ridley Scott film, but also that we made it into the actual film this time rather than just the DVD!”

Britain in a Day asked members of the public to film themselves on the same day, 12 November 2011, and submit their videos via YouTube for inclusion in the feature-length documentary to be shown on BBC2 as part of the corporation’s Cultural Olympiad.

Ridley Scott, known for such seminal movies as Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator, has overseen the project which was inspired by a similar feature, the award-winning Life in a Day, made by his production company Scott Free London.

Scott said “Film-making has always been about just picking up a camera, getting out there and doing it. Our aim for this new project is to get everyone behind the lens and give us a window onto one day in Britain.”

Britain in a Day will be executive produced by Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald who also created Life in a Day from over 4,500 hours of footage submitted by people from around the world.
