Lecturers and students from the BSc (Hons) Television and Broadcasting course are celebrating winning a prestigious Royal Television Society Award in the student factual film category.

Glenn Lewis Smith’s 16-minute film ‘Losing Sight of the Glory: Medical Reflections on the War’ won against strong competition. It tells a compelling story of medical advances learned through war.

A second University of Portsmouth film, ‘Men of Magic’, by Richard Bearpark, was shortlisted in the same awards.

Glenn was unable to attend the ceremony because he is working in the Gulf but he was kept up to date with a running commentary from the event via Twitter with course tutor Charlie Watts.

Glenn said: “Charlie had helped me find employment in Doha, Qatar last year but I had no idea the work would eventually preclude me from attending my own award ceremony. Thankfully, Charlie’s tweets allowed me to find out the good news seconds after it was announced in Winchester. I was completely over the moon when he told me that I had won.”

Glenn’s film was produced as a final year project, and his project supervisor was Gary Bown.

Gary said: “I’m delighted Glenn’s film has won. I can remember first seeing an early draft of his film and I was astonished. It is quite simply one of the best student films I’ve ever seen, and although it is very graphic in its detailing of particular injuries sustained in the battle of Waterloo, its narrative is gripping.

“I wish more students involved in producing TV factual work would pursue serious and weighty subject matter because there seems to be a trend for producing lots of comedy routines and light entertainment that steers clear of more involved topics.

“It was a real insight at the awards seeing the types of work that impress the broadcast industry. All of the work was challenging and really meaningful.”

The awards ceremony was attended by staff and students from the School of Creative Technologies, their peers from other south coast educational institutions and most of the professional broadcast teams from the BBC South and Meridian.

Charlie Watts said: “We attended the ceremony with high hopes, and when ‘Men of Magic’ didn’t win the award for best student documentary, Gary and I started to feel a bit anxious. The work my course usually produces is not necessarily focused on winning awards as we are more engaged with professional client work that is great for getting students graduate jobs, but both of the films that were nominated had that special something and that inspired us to submit them.”

Glenn returns from the Gulf this week and can’t wait to collect his award.

He said: “It feels amazing to win. I was really lucky to have to met Michael Crumplin, a retired general surgeon who features in my film and who helped me. He is so knowledgeable and enabled me to make a documentary about a dark and interesting part of history.

“The really great feeling is knowing that more people will hopefully be able to view my current and future work. That’s what every filmmaker wants, their work to be seen.

“I wanted to make this period in history more interesting to a younger audience, so animating the selected paintings to move was a way to make it more engaging.”

Glenn’s film will now be entered into the national Royal Television Society Awards to be held in London later this year.

Four UoP graduates from the course BSc (Hons) Television and Broadcasting, have embarked on a career launch of a lifetime thanks to an industry link with leading broadcast solutions service provider Gearhouse Broadcast.

The graduates, Glenn Smith, Max De Jong, Aaron Sampson, and Benn Lapper, flew out to Doha, Qatar on January the 3rd 2013, their mission: Help prepare a newly fitted Al Jazeera television studio to begin broadcasting live news to 40,000,000 viewers.

TV and Broadcasting course leader Charlie Watts is thrilled with the graduate opportunity. Charlie states “We must be doing something right at the University of Portsmouth, because this is another great example of students finishing a specialist degree course, and getting rewarded with excellent job opportunities”.

Charlie is keen to add that these career developments are due to a particular mindset and approach taken at both school and faculty level. “The School of Creative Technologies is about connecting with industry on a meaningful level, and it has taken years of work to develop trust with companies such as Gearhouse Broadcast. This company in particular has been fantastic in their support of helping to get students ready for industry, and they have already loaned very expensive industry kit to help give students the best opportunities possible for additional teaching and learning”.

The graduates are now coming up the the half-way mark of their present employment as camera operators in the 24/7 newsroom. Working in shifts Glenn, Max, Aaron and Ben are learning to use multi-million pound equipment to broadcast live around the World.

We wish all concerned the very best!

BA Hons Architecture Graduate, Martyn Webb, has a won a national competition by IDS (International Decorative Surfaces) for students to design aspects of its new company headquarters centred around IDS’s core values of innovation, creativity and sustainability.

The competition was launched in partnership with Staffordshire University and the National Design Academy and more than 50 entries were received.

Martyn told us “The competition was sent via University of Portsmouth e-mail and so I sought to find out more about the competition. It was more interior design-based than anything, but we could also come up with ideas for the exterior as well as the interior for the new HQ IDS building located at Stoke-On-Trent.”

The brief stated that the judging process was primarily based on sustainability as well as presentation, use of IDS materials and innovation of the ideas. The modern, eco-friendly building will have the lowest possible carbon footprint, utilising modern materials and building methods including rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling and solar panelling.

Martyn said “After reading the brief, I was psyched at the opportunity of creating a ‘green’ scheme. This is what ultimately gave my scheme a head-start as I showed passion through the whole of the building. We had a choice of 4 areas to design, but I went the whole way and designed the whole scheme.”

Martyn received £1000 in prize money plus a hosted visit to 100% Design in London in 2013, together with mentoring opportunities with the company’s many surface material suppliers. He said “I was elated when I found out I won. The ceremony was a very formal and exciting occasion with very nice and welcoming guests/hosts.”

Martyn is currently working in London pursing his career as an architect with Curl La Tourelle. Martyn said “The role of an architectural assistant here gives me a lot of experience and responsibility prior for a start at part 2 in 2013 in the newly refurbished and built Eldon building.”

We send Martyn our very best wishes, and look forward to welcoming him back in Portsmouth next year.

We recently interviewed James Farrar who graduated with a BA (Hons) Media Studies & Drama. James has been busy since his graduation, and this summer landed a role in Hollyoaks. We thought you would like to hear his views about his time at University and his experiences since he graduated.

In 2005 James moved to Portsmouth from South East London to do a 3 year Media Studies & Drama degree. He told us that, on arrival to Portsmouth, although he didn’t know that he was going to become a professional actor he always knew that it was something he was good at.

James said “Early into my first year I realised that if I was going to come out with a good degree then I would favour Drama units over Media as I was excelling in performance”.

Although he was always highly committed to his course he also participated fully in the student social scene. “I went out regularly being part of the UPFC (University Portsmouth Football Club), and ensured that I chose units in which there were no early morning Thursday lectures!”

James was supported by Stewart Olesker and Dominic Symonds throughout the 3 years of his studies. He told us that has no doubt that his tutors pushed him to follow a career in acting. He said “I distinctly remember having a beer with Dominic Symonds and Karen Savage in ’The Old Vic’ in my final weeks and was given a brutally honest insight into the working life as an actor with months out of work and endless auditions without success. But at the same time they advised me that I’d be a fool not to as they felt I had something”.

Consequently, after 2 shining references from his tutors, James was accepted onto the MA Acting for Screen Course at the prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama, London. He told us that the professional training was invaluable to him. On graduation James was signed to a London agent and had a part in his first British film within weeks of finishing his MA.

James tells us that since then he’s had a lot of experience in film and TV and that his profile got him through the door for a Hollyoaks audition. At the start of summer 2012 his agent was told there was interest from the Hollyoaks producers, and by late summer he was contracted on the show to play ‘Liam Gilmore’. James says “The schedule has meant that a lot of my time is now spent in Liverpool but I still find time to see my close friends in London, most of which are friends I met at Uni in Portsmouth”.

James speaks very positively about his time at Portsmouth, and especially the tutors who supported him. He told us “I have endless admiration for my tutors and the Uni itself for the support and encouragement they gave me to follow a career in acting”.

We wish him continued success.

To follow James he can be found on twitter: @JamesFarrar_

Adenan Nasri is a Television & Broadcasting graduate who, as a camera operator for Fully Focussed Community, worked on a film about the London Riots which is getting some amazing plaudits.

One year ago Britain saw the largest case of mass civil unrest this century. On the 4th day of the riots, in the face of the devastation and destruction, surrounded by negativity and misconception, 14 passionate young people from across London came together to take positive action.

The critically acclaimed, eye opening documentary RIOT FROM WRONG is a result of that positive action.

With dialogue from the film playing a major role in The Tricycle Theatre play ‘The Riots’, Official Selection at The East End and Portobello Film Festivals and sell out screenings at the BFI, Roundhouse and Somerset House, while also forming a key part of the Cambridge University, Riots Symposium and an official screening at The Houses of Parliament on Nov 6th, Riot From Wrong has been causing quite a stir!

What people are saying about the film:

‘This film breaks the mould of conventional perceptions peddled by the mainstream media. It opens doors that have remained firmly closed on a generation which feels disenfranchised and disempowered. Made by young people at street level who have access and credibility, not by pontificating pundits. It is set to become an historic and definitive document. A resource which should be viewed by all those who care about the restoration of an inclusive and effective democracy.’ Michael Mansfield QC

‘The best documentary on the August Riots bar none’. Adrian Dunbar - Actor & Director

‘One thing I learned from Riot From Wrong is that 14 young people can get closer to the truth than 90% of working journalists’. Everyone in the UK who has ever expressed an opinion on the riots (namely everyone) needs to see this as soon as possible. Dan Hancox - Author: Kettled Youth - Journalist: Guardian

‘Great documentary piece, creatively and editorially. Good narrative and most importantly emotional and engaging.’ Tanya Mukherjee - Head of Diversity: ITV

‘It was a very impressive film and demonstrated a unique insight into some of the causes of the riots. These young people could be the leading documentary makers of the future!‘ Ayshea Buksh – Reporter BBC London TV news

‘The best & most articulate portrayal of the reasons behind the riots that I’ve seen. I hope it reaches far and wide, it has a really important message & education for people across society.’ Amy Spiller - Media Trust

‘Informative and balanced portrayal of last summers events – Should be seen by a wider audience . Well done to all the young people who worked so hard on this well made documentary.’ Ginny Lunn – Director of Policy and Strategy: Princes Trust

‘This film is incredible, it really opened my eyes to the many issues young people face today…’ Mitch Winehouse – Amy Winehouse Foundation
