Work for this show at White Elephant has an underpinning of a “foreign” and as yet unpublished binary code system created by Peter. The “code” combines Latin characters with Japanese katakana phonemes. The number three and triptychs prove to be a strong base for many of Peter’s artefacts.

Barry’s ‘Liberty of Appearing’ work ‘endeavours to make us aware of the value of ordinary people’. In this exhibition he pieces together images of people at work or generally going about their daily life. His images echoes his statement ‘You don’t have to look too far to see that the world is run by two factions of privileged people’ which answers his research question’Have you ever wondered why poor people are poor?’.

University of Portsmouth 2nd year BA (Hons) Contemporary Fine Art students’ end of year exhibition is held on a trail in Southsea. The show consists of 17 different artists, all with unique styles, exhibiting their work in amongst the windows of Albert Road.

This spring shoppers in Southsea will see work by second year students in the windows of 16 businesses in order to bring contemporary art to a wider community audience.

The ‘Albert Road Trail’ was the idea of students who wanted to exhibit their work in a community setting and forge links with local businesses. Heather Dubois, whose work deals with the personal challenges which often surround human emotions says “I feel that it is important to have as wide and varied audience as possible, as everyone is at sometime or another affected by emotional issues.”

There are 17 artists taking part, who are currently producing a wide variety of work ranging from painting and sculpture to photography and installation. The project will allow them to show it in a diverse range of venues including the Kings Theatre and Parmiter’s antique shop. Traders in Albert Road have been keen to build up an inclusive and creative vibe and it is hoped that the Albert Road Trail can benefit from the success and popularity of events like Love Albert Road Day and Southsea Fest.

Alain LeRay, owner of hairdressers LeRays, said: “When the university students approached me, I was very keen. It’s a really good thing for Albert Road and I cannot wait.” Rick Christie, owner of Head Hairdressing for Men, echoed these sentiments by saying: “The work is going to look superb and it is great to think people will be coming to Albert Road to look at the art.”

Curatorial advisor, Denise Callender said “Although this is a group exhibition, I am very much looking forward to seeing how each piece works in a shop window; it will be as though each artist is having a mini solo show but connecting to a larger supportive network of artists and traders”.

The Albert Road Trail is an ideal concept in a community setting whilst forging links with its local businesses. This event will be an opportunity to meet the artists involved and join in to celebrate the event.

The exhibition will run from Monday 13th May to Sunday 19th May 2013, with a celebration private view on Wednesday 15th May that will begin at The Loft (above the King’s pub) from 6pm, with regular guided tours on which you can find out more about each exhibit from some of the artists. Tours will finish at the Wine Vaults where the celebration event culminates with an evening of entertainment, a raffle with fantastic prizes and the chance to socialise over a tipple and a bite to eat.

For updates, further information and enquiries follow Albert Road Trail

An exhibition guide which includes a map of the trail will be available at the Private View. A trail map is also available on the Facebook Page below.

A Final year BA (Hons) Drama and Performance student who created company Eyes Open Arts is raising funds for the Alzheimer Society Charity though the sales of tickets. The one night charitable production will be presenting ‘Mort’ a play written by Terry Pratchett and adapted by Stephen Briggs.

‘Mort was expecting to be apprenticed to a blacksmith, or a farmer. But he was offered a more… permanent contract. When Death offers Mort a job, he eagerly accepts. But soon he finds out that being Death isn’t as fun as it sounds. When he is asked to reap the soul of a young princess, his resolve falters, and he sets in motion a chain of events that could have major repercussions for the entire Disc. With the help of a 35-year old teenager and a rather underwhelming wizard, can Mort save the princess and win back his mortality? The chances are one in a million, but they tend to turn up nine times out of ten.’

This is the making of Efterklang´s 4th album and their first as a trio. The album is inspired by an expedition to the ghost town of Pyramiden on the island of Spitsbergen just 1000km from the North Pole. Mads, Casper and Rasmus traveled to Piramida in August 2011 and brought home a library of more than a 1000 field recordings that were used in the making of the songs on the album.

The album features guest appearances by Nils Frahm (piano), Peter Broderick (piano, violin), Earl Harvin (drums) and the 70-piece Danish girls choir; Sønderjydsk Pigekor.

You are invited to attend the preview launch event of New Creatives, a Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries and Aspex Gallery collaboration in partnership with seven local colleges on Friday 8th March at 6-8pm. The exhibition continues 9 March – 14 April, open daily 11am-4pm.

Young people aged 16-18 years in each of the seven colleges have been working with a commissioned artist alongside a University of Portsmouth CCI student buddy, to produce work to be displayed in Aspex in Gunwharf Quays that normally is home to the work of professional artists.

The exhibition’s theme is ‘does making things make us human?’ and the work is produced by students who are studying creative courses such as fine art, design, photography, media and film at BTEC, HND, A Level and Foundation. The exhibition will also feature the artistic response to working on the project by the CCI buddies.

The seven colleges are Chichester, Havant, Highbury, Fareham, Portsmouth, South Downs and St Vincent.

The commissioned artists are Chris Jenkins, Oliver Merkin and Eileen White.

The CCI buddies are Lauren Scott-Smith BA (Hons) Illustration, Matthew Jackson MA Digital Media and Elaine de Vries BA (Hons) Photography.

The project is designed to generate relationships, collaborations and a legacy of creative partnerships between the University of Portsmouth and colleges and organisations in the city of Portsmouth and surrounding region

More information can be found on the Aspex website.
