They undertake a range of commissions mostly from other departments within the University to produce educational, corporate and recruitment videos. The staff have considerable professional broadcast and corporate production experience.

They use industry standard equipment both in the studio and on location. They are a small unit and are often in need of help with crewing their production work. They are keen to provide students with long and short -term work experience.

They need enthusiastic and reliable people to fulfil a variety of roles. If you have some experience and knowledge it helps but it is not essential as they will also provide some on the job training. They need people who work well in a team. In particular they can provide roles for runners, camera assistants, sound assistants, floor managers, vision-mixers, production assistants, editing assistants and graphics assistants. You will be mentored and work as part of a professional team.

With some experience and the correct aptitude you can progress quickly to have more responsible roles as camera operators, sound recordists, editors, graphic designers, researchers, writers, producers and directors. In some cases there will provide paid opportunities.

There are times when they need one person other then when they need a whole crew. Some jobs will need people at short notice. Over the last 25 years they have provided many such opportunities to students. Many have gone onto to successful careers elsewhere some are still working for the University.

Tonic Music support musicians with mental health problems access music related activities with the aim of promoting recovery through music. The project organise music events with the aim of reducing social stigma and discrimination that is often associated with mental health.

The music workshop based around confidence and belief for musicians and poets. This will be a mixed ability / people with and without mental health problems. The workshop will be facilitated by Vinny Peculiar (lead singer of Parlour Flames – also an ex psychiatric nurse and commissioner) and Bonehead (ex lead guitarist from Oasis). They will also be performing at the evening gig directly after the workshop. The participants on the workshop are also invited to perform.

It is an ideal event for students interested in those areas but also a chance to see how a music event like this is run on our home turf and as you can see there are some potential networking opportunities with some famous names. This includes, registering participants, sell raffle tickets, tickets on the door, be a runner for the musicians performing etc.

Last year we organised our first music event at Portsmouth Pyramids with over 40 musicians and DJ’s (including Mike Joyce from The Smiths and Mark Morriss from The Bluetones) across 4 stages. We attracted around 1000 people over the course of the event.

Anyone wanting to take part on the workshop will need to be available from 10.30am until 5.30pm.

The evening gig will be:

sound check 6.30pm, doors 7.30pm

show 8pm until 11pm.

All interested parties should send their CV and a quick covering e-mail stating which role you are keen on to: Tonicmusic@hotmail.co.uk

There is an even bigger event, Tonic 2, on 12th October where you can get involved with the event at a much earlier stage in different tasks, including events promotion.

This will be held at The Pyramids to coincide with World Mental Health Day. We have confirmed The Neville Staple Band (The Specials), Parlour Flames (ex Oasis), Small Fakers, Hipshaker DJ’s with many more to be announced.

Click on the image below to see details of the t-shirt design competition – closing date 31st July.

Work for this show at White Elephant has an underpinning of a “foreign” and as yet unpublished binary code system created by Peter.
Barry’s ‘Liberty of Appearing’ work ‘endeavours to make us aware of the value of ordinary people’. His images echoes his statement ‘You don’t have to look too far to see that the world is run by two factions of privileged people’ which answers his research question’Have you ever wondered why poor people are poor?’.

University of Portsmouth 2nd year BA (Hons) Contemporary Fine Art students’ end of year exhibition is held on a trail in Southsea. The show consists of 17 different artists, all with unique styles, exhibiting their work in amongst the windows of Albert Road.

This spring shoppers in Southsea will see work by second year students in the windows of 16 businesses in order to bring contemporary art to a wider community audience.

The ‘Albert Road Trail’ was the idea of students who wanted to exhibit their work in a community setting and forge links with local businesses. Heather Dubois, whose work deals with the personal challenges which often surround human emotions says “I feel that it is important to have as wide and varied audience as possible, as everyone is at sometime or another affected by emotional issues.”

There are 17 artists taking part, who are currently producing a wide variety of work ranging from painting and sculpture to photography and installation. The project will allow them to show it in a diverse range of venues including the Kings Theatre and Parmiter’s antique shop. Traders in Albert Road have been keen to build up an inclusive and creative vibe and it is hoped that the Albert Road Trail can benefit from the success and popularity of events like Love Albert Road Day and Southsea Fest.

Alain LeRay, owner of hairdressers LeRays, said: “When the university students approached me, I was very keen. It’s a really good thing for Albert Road and I cannot wait.” Rick Christie, owner of Head Hairdressing for Men, echoed these sentiments by saying: “The work is going to look superb and it is great to think people will be coming to Albert Road to look at the art.”

Curatorial advisor, Denise Callender said “Although this is a group exhibition, I am very much looking forward to seeing how each piece works in a shop window; it will be as though each artist is having a mini solo show but connecting to a larger supportive network of artists and traders”.

The Albert Road Trail is an ideal concept in a community setting whilst forging links with its local businesses. This event will be an opportunity to meet the artists involved and join in to celebrate the event.

The exhibition will run from Monday 13th May to Sunday 19th May 2013, with a celebration private view on Wednesday 15th May that will begin at The Loft (above the King’s pub) from 6pm, with regular guided tours on which you can find out more about each exhibit from some of the artists. Tours will finish at the Wine Vaults where the celebration event culminates with an evening of entertainment, a raffle with fantastic prizes and the chance to socialise over a tipple and a bite to eat.

For updates, further information and enquiries follow Albert Road Trail

An exhibition guide which includes a map of the trail will be available at the Private View. A trail map is also available on the Facebook Page below.

‘Whether you specialize in typography as a subject in itself or use type within your graphic or communication designs, understanding more about what type is and how it works will inform your practice and improve your work.

If you want to know more about the difference between Bodoni and Bembo; why Arial is not the same as Helvetica and what alternatives to consider; what types to respect and what types to avoid, then you will discover the answers here. This book is about looking closer at what most take for granted. Once hooked, you will never see type in the same way again.
