Jon Adams, Artist in Residence at University of Portsmouth, is working on an exciting project which mixes science and art – a residency and research project which is based at Cambridge University. We thought you would like to hear the latest news from his residency.

Jon Adams, 'Rose folds detailed', Manipulated photograph, 3rd January 2013. Photo: Jon Adams.

For our previous story (October 2012) see here

The project, Konfirmation Systemizing, is described by Jon as ‘Revaluing Autistic Thinking’. During his residency Jon is working with staff at the Autism Research Centre at the University of Cambridge, and the Centre’s Director Professor Simon Baron-Cohen.

Rather than a specific pathology, Baron-Cohen sees autism as being on a continuum in the general population. He proposes that certain features of autistic people – ‘obsessions’ and repetitive behaviour – previously regarded as purposeless, are conversely highly purposive, intelligent (hyper-systemising), and a sign of a different way of thinking. He argues that high-functioning autism or Asperger’s Syndrome need not just lead to disability, but can also lead to talent.

This neuroscience arts residency project is funded by the Wellcome Trust and commissioned by The Arts Catalyst.

The Konfirmation – Systemization website is hosted by Art’s Catalyst here

You can follow Jon’s Konfirmation – Systemization blog on a-n here

Jon’s blog is hosted by a-n, whose aim is to stimulate and support contemporary visual arts practice, and if you are not already a member – click here for details. It is free for students, so don’t miss out! a-n is used by thousands of artists and arts organisations to share news, good practice, opportunities, knowledge and resources.

Jon’s blog on a-n has been at number 9 in their top ‘Artists Talking’ blogs for a couple of weeks, but is now up to number 7 and was featured in the latest an e-newsletter.

Jon is setting out on a personal, artistic and scientific journey, processing conversations, observations and experiments through his Aspergers ‘filters’. The process and final work will be ‘naturally systemised’, presented in audio and visual metaphor.

The bog doesn’t reveal exactly what the artwork will be. We can reveal that it will be a piece of music, but further information will not be revealed until July 2013. The blog is also unusual in the fact that it includes poetry, word pattern and a imagery. The blog documents the project, not in a traditional commentary or diary way, but in a way which is informative and intimately personal.

Jon is keen to see knowledge transfer from this Cambridge residency. He is providing information to the scientists researching autism at Cambridge University by taking autism tests and by recording his personal experiences of Aspergers, Dyslexia and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He is working closely with Creative Technology staff and students – A 3rd year BSc (Hons) Television and Broadcasting student is recording the journey of the project which will form part of the final artwork.

Jon Adams, 'floor universe details', Manipulated photograph, 4th February 2013. Photo: Jon Adams.

Jon told us that he has noticed during this project that he has used much more colour than he usually does in the digital artworks he is creating to accompany the blog. “I have always had difficulty with colour. Being synaesthetic evidently goes with my Aspergers, so that objects and especially colours to me are not ‘unliked’ or unappreciated but taste and shout connotations across the room. Aspergers thinking often trends to the black and white”. He continued “I am not saying I don’t appreciate colour as some colours I do desire, but some I detest. I have my favourite shades and schemes that taste calm or are easy on the minds ear – I know what I like and in their rightful place they rest”.

We look forward to seeing and hearing the final artwork when it is revealed in July. In the meantime, make sure you keep an eye on Jon’s blog.

Searle Kochberg, Principal Lecturer, Creative Technologies is part of the steering committee for a new project called Rainbow Jews. The project aims to record and showcase Jewish Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) history from the 1950s to today.

The project, led by Su Knan at Montagu Centre London, received a grant of nearly £60,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund in order to document the voices and experiences of Jewish LGBT people in the UK. That money will be used to record an oral history and create an archive.

Liberal Judaism has recruited London-based volunteers from ALL backgrounds to help with this landmark project.

UoP Creative Technology students will be involved this summer and autumn – Searle has arranged placements for them filming documentary segments for the project website and the London show next year.

There are currently 6 UoP volunteers from TVFP, and Searle is specifically interested in students participating who are AV production specialists. Contact Searle on Searle.kochberg@port.ac.uk.

Student volunteers will be required for summer 2013 (May through Sept) to film and edit interviews with LGBTQ pioneers in Jewish life in London, although there is the possibility that will extend to cover Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow. Students will be responsible for all aspects of the filming including lighting, sound recording and editing into 5 minute interviews. Students will be organised into groups of 3, each responsible for 3 films.

The Project organisers will cover basic travel and food, but students need to arrange accommodation in London. All the students involved will receive credit for their contribution.

The films will be to be added to project website and will be screened at a exhibition in spring 2014 at the London School of Economics.

We will keep you informed as the project progresses.

We thought we would trial a short story about funding opportunities that are available to students to see if you find this information useful. We have received information about the following sources recently, so we will start with these.

CCI Professional practice fund:

Cibas has been developed from the perspective of what it is to be an artist and deals with specific issues that arise from artistic and creative practice. The team develop training days, seminars and networking events based on the needs of the artists and small arts businesses that use the service. There are links here some of their guidance:

Crowd funding platforms are becoming more and more popular. Platforms such as https://sponsorcraft.com and http://www.kickstarter.com/ can help you to raise funds for student projects, ideas, and events. It’s usually free to start your fundraising on these sites, but you do need to be aware that they may charge a % of the money collected. http://crowdsunite.com/ lists other crowd funding platforms.

The graduates, Glenn Smith, Max De Jong, Aaron Sampson, and Benn Lapper, flew out to Doha, Qatar on January the 3rd 2013, their mission: Help prepare a newly fitted Al Jazeera television studio to begin broadcasting live news to 40,000,000 viewers.

TV and Broadcasting course leader Charlie Watts is thrilled with the graduate opportunity. Charlie states “We must be doing something right at the University of Portsmouth, because this is another great example of students finishing a specialist degree course, and getting rewarded with excellent job opportunities”.

Charlie is keen to add that these career developments are due to a particular mindset and approach taken at both school and faculty level. “The School of Creative Technologies is about connecting with industry on a meaningful level, and it has taken years of work to develop trust with companies such as Gearhouse Broadcast. This company in particular has been fantastic in their support of helping to get students ready for industry, and they have already loaned very expensive industry kit to help give students the best opportunities possible for additional teaching and learning”.

The graduates are now coming up the the half-way mark of their present employment as camera operators in the 24/7 newsroom. Working in shifts Glenn, Max, Aaron and Ben are learning to use multi-million pound equipment to broadcast live around the World.

We wish all concerned the very best!

The Third International Utzon Symposium was held in the Palace el Bacha, Marrakech, Morocco in 2012. Organised as a collaboration between the Jørn Utzon Research Network (JURN), the Utzon Research Center (Aalborg, Denmark) and l’Ecole Nationale d’Architecture (Rabat, Morocco) the event was followed by a week-long Utzon Workshop, for academics, students and practitioners.

The Symposium and Workshop were led by Juhani Pallasmaa, Architect, writer and theorist from Helsinki, Finland, Jan Utzon, Jørn Utzon’s son, and Richard Leplastrier, an Australian Architect, AIA Gold Medallist and former employee of Utzon.

‘Utzon’s Paradigm’ was the theme of the Symposium and provided the first public forum for discussion regarding the paradigmatic framework developed by JURN for the interrogation of Utzon’s canon of work and his design methodology.

Some seventy students, academics and practitioners attended the Symposium from such diverse locations as South Africa, Tasmania, mainland Australia, Denmark, France and the UK. In addition to presentations from our keynote speakers, presentations were made by Adrian Carter (Associate Professor, University of Aalborg and Co-Director JURN), Dr. Lars Botin (Associate Professor, University of Aalborg), Mathew Hinds and Poppy Taylor (Tasmanian practitioners and academics), John Roberts (Lecturer, University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia) and from University of Portsmouth School of Architecture, Nicola Crowson (Senior Lecturer and JURN Steering Group Member) and Roger Tyrrell (Principal Lecturer and Co-Director JURN).

The Symposium proceedings are to be published in July 2013 comprising transcripts of presentations and academic papers.

Fifty participants attended the Workshop that followed the Symposium, again, from a diverse range of geographical locations. Focused upon the concept of ‘The Beautiful Idea’ participants worked both in the context of Marrakech and later the High Atlas Mountain village of Ait Benhaddou, exploring the particular nature of place within these rich cultural contexts. In groups that were constituted by the organisers to reflect diversity in age, gender and experience, participants were asked to define and design a ‘Beautiful Idea’ that would capture the spirit of place.

Working collaboratively, a range of installations were designed, built and then presented, each of which captured and re-presented elements of a unique experience. That experience was reflected in participant feedback:

‘The Spring Workshop was a truly life changing and motivational experience that has reinforced my passion for architecture. The enthusiasm and energy of the tutors was inspirational.’

(Australian Student Participant)

‘As a participating observer at the JURN workshop I was impressed by the professionalism that characterized the preparation and conduction of the workshop. Everything had been carefully considered and all means had been taken in order to give the participants the best possible experience. Concerning the content of the symposium and workshop, this also exceeded any expectation that anyone might have. I am sorry not to be more helpful in my evaluation, but I can only say that It was a truly great experience that I will remember and return to in my thoughts for years.’

(Danish Academic Participant)
