Teaching Excellence Framework
The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) is the Government's way of measuring teaching excellence in Higher Education institutions.
TEF matters, because it's an independent judgement of what we do and how we prepare students for work or further study after graduating. We're judged by a panel of academics, students and employers.
We hold the highest possible rating, Gold.
We're a highly ranked university
The panel judges said that we deliver 'consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for [our] students', and that each is 'of the highest quality found in the UK.'
Major factors in our Gold rating are the superb academic and personal support we give our students, our excellent facilities, and the way we prepare students for successful careers after graduation.
The Gold rating also places us in the top 20% of 299 higher education institutions that entered the Teaching Excellence Framework in 2017.

Criteria and metrics
The Government worked with the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Office for Students (OfS) to implement the Teaching Excellence Framework.
They assessed universities and colleges using these Teaching Excellence Framework criteria:
- Teaching quality
- Learning environment
- Learning gain
- Student outcomes
They reviewed metrics using national data on how satisfied students are with their teaching and learning, how many students complete their courses, and how many go into employment or further study after they graduate. The data is benchmarked to take account of the different mix of students at each institution.
The panel also considered additional written evidence of teaching excellence, which each institution submitted in January 2017.
To be eligible for a Teaching Excellence Framework award, a university or higher education college must teach undergraduate courses and meet a set of rigorous national quality requirements.
The Teaching Excellence Framework is a voluntary scheme. Some eligible institutions decided not to take part.
We welcomed the introduction of the Teaching Excellence Framework. This is because it provides a valuable guide for prospective students about how well different universities perform in their core business – educating young people and transforming their lives.
