Gillian joined the University of Portsmouth in 2006 following a career as a Merchant Navy Officer and a freelance HR Consultant. She graduated in Human Resources Management from Southampton Solent University and is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Gillian is a Personal Tutor at Levels 4 and 5 and is the Level 5 Year Tutor.
She is also the module co-ordinator for the Level 4 Academic and Professional Skills module, for which she draws upon her HR management experience to inform her lectures.
Gillian teaches Teeline shorthand (a core skill) on the Journalism degree. She teaches the subject in an innovative way that incorporates modern technologies and 'real world' scenarios. She has been a member of the NCTJ Shorthand Examining Board and a regular speaker at the annual NCTJ Shorthand Conference.
Gillian also supervises students on Sandwich Placements, in which students take a year away from university and go into the workplace. She provides advice, support and liaises with employers, and she marks the assessment submitted following completion of their year out.
Gillian is the school (FMC) academic lead for Student Wellbeing and offers one-to-one guidance, advice and support as well as signposting to other sources of support, to students within the school who may be experiencing personal difficulties.
