Applicant Experience Days

University of Portsmouth Open Day

GET THE MOST out OF YOUR DAY

After we've offered you a place on an undergraduate course we'll invite you to an Applicant Experience Day.

You'll get to discover more about your chosen degree and ask us anything about your course and being a student. We’ll also show you around so you can discover more about the city and University.

Never visited the University before? You can check out our halls of residence, have a guided tour of the campus and get a feel for the city you'll call home.

Already been to campus? You can remind yourself why Portsmouth is a great place to study, and meet current students and staff.

Whether you've been here before or not, take a look at our guide below to get the most out of your day.

Planning your day

Checking in

You can check in anytime at the Student Union on Cambridge Road (PO1 2EF) or at the building where you're attending your course session.

At check in, you’ll get a programme with all the information you need to make the most of your day. And we’ll point you to where you need to go first.

Your course session

Plan your day around your course session, as you won't want to miss it. You'll get to interact with lecturers, look around the facilities you'll use on your course and take part in workshops or taster lectures.

You can also pick the brains of our current students about life and study in Portsmouth and meet your future classmates.

You'll get all the details a couple of weeks before your visit, so keep an eye on your emails.

Exploring the city and the University

This is your chance to explore. You can do a guided tour of the campus, giving you a feel for the University and city.

Accommodation tours and talks

Moving away from home is a big step and we want to make sure you find the perfect home from home.

Student housing talks, covering your uni housing essentials, will take place regularly throughout the day. You can also pop into our halls of residence to take a look at where you could be living and explore the option of sharing or lodging in private accommodation.

Remember, you’re guaranteed a room in halls if you apply as a new, full-time undergraduate student starting in September or October 2019 and make us your firm choice.

Information Fair

For the lowdown on everything from support services to student finance, head to the Information Fair. It’s open from 10am-4pm in the Students’ Union.

You can:

  • Ask our accommodation team about housing, halls of residence and private renting
  • Chat with our financial experts to breeze through Student Finance
  • Learn about the support services that’ll keep you happy and healthy during your studies
  • Speak to our admissions team, who’ll help you figure out where your course could take you

Refreshments

Have a drink on us! You’ll get a wristband when you check in, which gives you and your guests free tea and coffee at our University cafes. You can choose between a hot and cold lunch option too, also on us.

You’ll find our cafes in Eldon Building, Park Building, Dennis Sciama Building, Cafe Coco (by the Student's Union) and Portland Building. They'll be open throughout the day.

If you’re out and about in Portsmouth, there are loads of cafes and restaurants throughout Guildhall Walk, Southsea and Gunwharf Quays.

Getting here

Park and ride

Portsmouth has a fantastic Park and Ride service to save you the hassle of finding parking in the city. It costs just £4 for the day. You’ll find it off the M275 at the entrance to the city.

The buses depart every 4 minutes during peak times and every 7 minutes during off-peak times.

You can catch the University bus service that runs from the Park and Ride car park to just outside the Students’ Union on Cambridge Road. Look out for our friendly student ambassadors (dressed in purple) who will help.

Please allow around 20 minutes from parking to arrival on campus.

Trains

The closest station is Portsmouth and Southsea. It’s a 10-minute walk from the Student's Union and close to all buildings on campus.

Car parking

To get to the University, take the M275 into Portsmouth (signed 'Portsmouth West'), whether approaching from the east (A3(M)/A27) or the west (M27 Junction 12). Ignore the M27/A27 junctions signed to Southsea and Hilsea.
