Our Class of 2020 received a congratulatory card from the Alumni team through their letterboxes, celebrating the completion of their degree.

We worked with Kitty Turner, BA Hons Illustration 2020, for an image that truly captured your time at Portsmouth. We hope that in five, or even fifty years time, you’ll look back at the gift and reminisce about your time at University.

We spoke with Kitty to find out about her inspiration for the artwork.

“I applied for the artwork competition because it was an amazing opportunity. It was great to get the chance to design something special on behalf of the university. As a fellow Class of 2020 graduate, it was a nice way to complete my time here.

I have grown up in Portsmouth, so it has always been special to me. However, it has been great to experience the city in a different way as a student. To have a great University in my home city is amazing, as I already had a special connection with Portsmouth and knew what the city had to offer.

When designing the artwork, I was inspired by my memories. The design features a collection of iconic sights and attractions located around Portsmouth. My hope is that the design will remind you all of your time at University, and memories you’ve made along the way.

The University is located within the heart of the city, and you are never far from an iconic place. These places will often remind us of a particular experience, whether that’s going to lectures, attending events or just being with your friends. It is these individual and personal experiences that make the city so special. I aimed to incorporate this concept into a design that will spark these memories for years to come.

I loved the Illustration course, the lecturers were all really helpful and encouraged us to explore different methods of illustration. Overall, it has been a great way to experience and think about what it means to be an illustrator.

At the moment, I’m not sure about my next steps, especially during these unusual times. But my aim is to freelance, I’m passionate about illustration, animation, model making and design. I also like to challenge myself and look forward to working on a variety of projects in the future!”

We want to wish the best of luck to Kitty on her next steps, and to the rest of our Class of 2020. We hope you enjoy the artwork and cherish the memories you’ve made at Portsmouth for a lifetime.

You’ll always be part of Portsmouth.
