Earlier this month, we celebrated prominent public officials at a VIP and Alumni Reception in Nigeria.

The event, held at the British High Commission in Abuja, celebrated members of the Nigeria Alumni Chapter within the Alumni Association. This group helps former graduates to stay connected not just with the University, but one another too.

The reception was hosted by Chris Pycroft, Head of DFID, Nigeria (representing the Deputy High Commissioner) and Chris Chang, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Global Engagement at the University of Portsmouth.

Chris said: “We are incredibly proud of our Nigerian Alumni Association. Proactively they set up this chapter, organising an Executive Committee. Their experience at the University of Portsmouth has inspired them to give back to help people less fortunate than themselves through their Internally Displaced Persons project, helping people fleeing Boko Haram.

They also support recent graduates with networking activities, to assist them in preparing for their future careers and have taken part in the high profile #NgTalentUKEducated events. We are delighted to learn of our alumni’s achievements and their ascension to high-ranking public positions throughout Nigeria.”

56 people attended the event, of which 40 were alumni, celebrating the graduates listed below and their achievements:

  • Mr Lai Yahaha, Senior Special Adviser on Strategy to President Buhari
  • Dr Aliyu Hamza Danagalan from the Department of Maritime Boundary, National Boundary Commission
  • Professor Spencer Onuh, CEO of the Centre for Satellite Technology Development
  • Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, the Inspector General of Nigerian Police
  • Sand Mba Kalu, former University of Portsmouth Alumni President

Over 200 Nigerian students enrol each year on undergraduate, postgraduate taught and doctoral programmes, making Portsmouth one of the most popular destinations in the UK. Our Nigeria Alumni Chapter has been active in various projects and created a supportive network for all University of Portsmouth graduates living in Nigeria.
