Following its recent rise to 3rd place in the Guardian UK University league tables, our BA (Hons) Graphic Design course goes from strength to strength as many of its students seize industry awards and nominations. Here are some of this year's successes.

London Design Festival

Recent graduate Hannah Storey will exhibit her AccessAutism project at Design Research for Change showcase at the London Design Festival, Old Truman Brewery from Thursday 19 – Sunday 22 September 2019. AccessAutism is a free app designed for adults with Asperger's Syndrome to help them recentre in the outside world after sensory overload, using calming techniques.

Senior lecturer Michael Wamposzyc encouraged Hannah to enter the showcase, where internationally acknowledged design practitioners select the winners.

2019 YCN New Now Student Awards

As part of their Professional Practice module, second-year students Rosanna Smith and Adam Warner won in the 2019 YCN New Now Student Awards, a programme representing some of the most urgent and diverse communication challenges across culture and commerce. Their winning works were in response to company briefs, and they were guided by senior lecturer Danie McCabe.

Rosie's brief, set by UK charity Art Fund, was to create a campaign to raise awareness among students of the alleviating benefits of museum and gallery visits on stress and anxiety. Meanwhile, Adam worked with London-based housing association Peabody on a new identity for their community spaces that easily identified and united them.

Both students received their awards at a ceremony in Toynbee Hall, London. Peabody later invited Adam to show his work at YCN's Shoreditch head office during an exhibition by Peabody residents and executives.

2019 D&AD New Blood

Graduates Ashleigh Eilledge and Tom Aisthorpe won 'Ones to Watch' awards at the 2019 D&AD New Blood graduate festival. Ashleigh created a magazine celebrating women in the military, while Tom designed a modern dating app called SLIDE.

Creative agency Quantock invited Harriet Cox and Lauren Wade to present their work at Quantock's Bristol head office as part of a 30th anniversary celebrating natural creativity. The event was organised with D&AD to showcase emerging creative talent in the UK.

Ethan Muir was also nominated for an award by Chrissy Levett (founder of Creative Conscience) for his Homelessness still Human project, which aims to alter perceptions of homelessness.

South West Design and Digital (SWDD) Awards

At the re-launched SWDD Awards, student Claire Dunford won £1000 in the Graphic Design category for her tennis court behaviour book 'Losing It', while Girbaut Bawangudi was a Digital category finalist for his interactive project KITNECT, which explores the meaning of premier football kit design elements.

Since the awards, Claire's started a full-time Junior Designer role at Dyson, and Girbaut is doing a 3-month paid internship at Manchester United.

International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD)

Nine students won the prestigious International Society of Typographic Designers Award, which results in ISTD membership. The Society awarded its highest Commendation to Claire Dunford, making it her second accolade for her 'Losing It' project.
