An online lie detection study in which participants test their lie detection abilities by evaluating whether transcripts they read are true or false.

What will participants be doing?

This is a lie detection study that will be conducted online via Zoom. Participants will read transcripts from previously conducted interviews on memorable events. Those events were either genuinely (truth tellers) or falsely (lie tellers) experienced by the interviewees. After reading each transcript, participants will determine whether the interviewee in the transcript is lying or telling the truth. At the end of the study, participants will complete a short questionnaire. This is a one-session experiment that will take approximately 45 minutes.

Participant characteristics:

  • any gender
  • aged 18+
  • currently living in the UK
  • staff, student and the general public

Reward

Participants will receive a £10 reward for taking part. In addition, participants who are accurate in distinguishing true and false transcripts will be entered in a draw to win one of three cash prizes (£50, £75, £100).

Closing date

31 July 2022.
