On 5 October 2024, Portsmouth celebrates World Teachers' Day, honouring the crucial insights of teachers and the importance of their voices in education.
World Teachers’ Day is an annual event that highlights the crucial role teachers play in society and acknowledges their hard work, commitment, and the essential role they play in shaping the future.
World Teachers’ Day 2024 theme
This year's World Teachers’ Day theme is all about recognising and appreciating teachers' voices and working towards a new social contract for education. It's a day to honour teachers globally and to emphasise the importance of listening to their experiences to overcome challenges and improve education for everyone.
Voices from our teaching community
In keeping with 2024's theme, let's take a look at how our outstanding teachers, alumni, and students have gained new insights, skills, and knowledge from their careers and studies.
After studying the MSc [Educational Leadership and Management], I found myself seeing things in my school in new ways. I gained an understanding of the school’s organisational culture and noticed how that culture grew and developed. I also became more aware of the decisions I take as a leader
Adam Lewis, MSc Educational Leadership and Management
I really enjoyed this one-year journey, as it has added lots of knowledge and insight to my experiences. It has offered me the opportunity to grow my knowledge about the education system and policies in the UK through the assignments and work we have done.
Bahra Karim, BA (Hons) Education Studies (Top-Up)
Having worked in the field of education for 18 years, I am extremely passionate about developing leaders and managers who can engage and inspire staff to deliver an efficacious learning experience for their pupils and students.
Richard Poole, Course Leader, MSc Educational Leadership and Management
I’d love to bring out some kind of educational tool or solution. I’m creative and did my original degree in marketing, so I’d like to make something creative that solves problems.
Liberty Bourke, PGCE Primary
Get your voice heard by becoming a teacher
Here at Portsmouth, we understand why it's important to inspire the next generation of learners and to help teachers use their voices and experiences to shape the future of education. If you’re passionate about making a difference and enjoy inspiring others, teaching might be the ideal career path for you. To become a teacher in the UK, you’ll need to complete an approved teacher training course, for example, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE course).
What is a PGCE?
A PGCE is typically a one-year course that provides training and qualifications for those looking to become teachers. Throughout the course, you'll take part in academic study and gain hands-on teaching experience. After completing your PGCE, you’ll be ready to apply for teaching positions in schools and other educational institutions.
At Portsmouth, we have a variety of study options available, including the option to study your PGCE part-time. We also have full-time and distance learning options so you can study in a way that works best for you.
Gold rating in national assessment of teaching excellence
