Weekly Update: Coronavirus cases at the University
We're encouraging students and staff to get themselves tested for Covid-19 so we can proactively monitor the virus at our University, take action when needed and keep each other as safe as possible.
At 10am on Monday 5 April, there were 2 active cases - Covid positive students and staff who were self-isolating at the University at that time.
Of these 2 active cases, 1 case was a student, and 1 was a staff member. This is out of a population of 31,000 students and 3,600 staff.
Support for self-isolating students
We’re providing a support package for our students self-isolating for 14 days in halls of residence and private accommodation which includes:
- Welfare checks - our ResLife Team are making regular checks on students and signposting them to relevant services such as our Student Wellbeing Service.
- Free food parcels - for students in self-catered accommodation, and three hot meals a day to students living in our catered accommodation at Rees Hall and Burrell House.
- Laundry service - free clean bedding to students living in University and Unite Students halls of residence. The Student Housing Company provides clean bedding at a charge.
- Cleaning products - a package of cleaning products to ensure that houses or flats remain hygienic places to live during self-isolation.
- Laptop loan schemes - long-term and short-term laptop loan schemes for students who need to borrow a laptop to access our online teaching and study resources.

Advice and guidance
In partnership with the Department of Health and Social Care and Portsmouth City Council, we’re hosting a Covid-19 testing site at Eldon car park for anyone in the local community exhibiting symptoms - the first University in the country to do so. Please be aware that availability may be limited at times as the national system deals with increased demand, and any changes in Government testing policy will affect this site.

Our students are expected to take personal responsibility for their own and others’ safety, and the vast majority do this. As a University we are encouraging students to act responsibly, and will take necessary steps against those who don’t. There are regular communications with students asking them to follow government rules and outlining the potential consequences if they do not.
If residents are concerned about a social gathering or other disturbance, they should first report a breach of COVID regulations on the Hampshire Police website or by calling 101. Please do not use 999 except for emergencies.
Resident complaints about student behaviour can be made to the University’s Student and Neighbour Liaison Service which can be contacted on 023 9284 3214 or on email@example.com.
Any resident who wishes to report a noise disturbance should do so via the council website or by calling 023 9283 4092 between 9.00am - 4.00pm.

We’re taking a range of measures to keep the campus safe and stop the spread of coronavirus, including:
- All teaching to large groups are delivered online using enhanced technology
- Proactive Covid-19 testing on campus with for students and staff without symptoms
- Touch points such as doors, handles and stair rails are cleaned regularly
- Communal areas, including teaching areas, toilets and hallways are cleaned daily
- Protective screens where there are lots of face-to-face interactions, such as in the library and reception areas, are installed
- The number of people using lifts are restricted, so everyone has more space
- One-way systems are in place in buildings
- Hand sanitising stations are available around campus
- Temperature scanning are in place at strategic places around the campus
- Signs and floor markings are in place to help with social distancing and encourage good hygiene
- Staggered start times for teaching

The University of Portsmouth Eye Clinic is open for appointments, with key changes to protect patients and staff, including.
- Reduced patients numbers in clinic and attendance by appointment only
- PPE will be worn by staff, appropriate to the test being carried out
- Appointment times will be longer and staggered
- Enhanced cleaning regimes
- Social distancing measures in place
- Hand sanitiser and face masks for patients on arrival
University cafes have restricted opening hours, are offering takeaway online and have safety measures in place. More information is available on the student website MyPort.
Printing services are operational offsite and continuing to manage production of all types of printed requirements for the University, and for strategic partners and businesses across Portsmouth.
To get in touch with the team, staff can order corporate printing through the Marketing Portal and strategic partners and business can email firstname.lastname@example.org. A member of the team will get in touch to help you with your requirements. We will ensure all printed materials are delivered to any specified delivery address so no need to collect.
If you're undergoing assessments at another university that impact your application to study with us, we recognise the coronavirus outbreak may affect your ability to engage and complete your assessments.
Universities are making adjustments to assessment practices and Examination and Assessment Regulations, and we'll take those adjustments into account when reviewing your place here with us.

We'll still consider your application even though exams have been cancelled. We're working through applications every day to ensure they're assessed and applicants receive a decision as soon as possible.
We want to treat all applicants fairly and ensure we can support you in transitioning to higher education this year.
If you've applied for an undergraduate course and have accepted a conditional offer, we’ll confirm your place on 13 August. If you don't get the grades needed, you may be able to apply through Clearing.
If you've applied for a postgraduate course and have received a conditional offer, we'll continue to process your application as normal. In light of the crisis, universities are having to make adjustments to assessment practices and Examination and Assessment Regulations. We recognise the coronavirus outbreak may affect your ability to engage and complete your assessments and we have therefore factored this into our Extenuating Circumstances (ECF) criteria.
Your unconditional offer remains unconditional and isn't affected by exam cancellations or assessment changes.

Prospective international students
As Covid restrictions are starting to ease in England we are now able to start face-to-face teaching for some of our courses from Monday 8 March.
You can find out if your course is resuming on the Return to face-to-face teaching page and your course leader will be in contact to share plans for your course.
If your course is included on the list but you are unable to travel to the UK you can continue your learning fully online.
If your course is not listed your teaching will remain online-only until further notice.
We will let you know about the remaining courses as soon as we have more information.
When you travel to the UK, you will be required to present a negative COVID-19 test taken up to 72 hours prior to departure to the UK.
You will be required to self-isolate for 10 days, even if you have a negative test result.
You will need to book and pay for a travel test package, which will include COVID-19 tests to be taken on or before day 2 and on or after day 8 of your quarantine - this costs
You must fill in a passenger locator form. You will need to book a quarantine hotel if you have been in or through any of the countries listed in the last 10 days.
If you have to self isolate, we can provide you with free food parcels for the 10 day period. Each food parcel will last for up to 5 days. The University will arrange for these food parcels to be delivered to halls of residence and private sector accommodation in Portsmouth.
We are continuing our on campus programme of asymptomatic testing for students and staff without COVID symptoms. However the test the University provides cannot be used as part of the ‘Test to Release’ scheme.
We strongly encourage all students in the city to take a test and to follow self isolating guidelines where necessary in order to manage the transmission of the virus and help keep everyone in our University and city safe. Remember to book two tests (which should be three days apart) before restarting any face-to-face activity on campus and/or using facilities such as the library.

For you to make the most out of your experience and settle into university life, you should aim to be on campus as early as possible. The blended approach to teaching means that as well as the online learning, there will still be elements of face-to-face teaching which we know is important to you and crucial for many courses.
However, we understand that it may not be possible for you to join us on campus at the beginning of term because of existing health conditions or because you are not comfortable travelling yet, so you will be able to start your degree online and join us on campus when you are ready.
We accept other equivalent tests or evidence of English Language proficiency if IELTS have been cancelled in your country. Our English language requirements page has a full list of acceptable qualifications.
We offer our pre-sessional English courses online as well as blended Autumn courses leading into our January intake. Please find further information on our pre-sessional English web page.
At present, you'll still need to provide a deposit or suitable sponsor letter to receive an unconditional offer. However, we've updated our deposit policy so if you're unable to start your course due to coronavirus, you'll receive a full refund of your deposit.

Delayed visa applications
At present, the latest date for registration is 3 weeks from the start date of the programme. Please note, some courses do not allow for late registration
If you wish to defer joining the University. We have postgraduate courses and top-up undergraduate programmes you can begin in February 2021 or alternatively you can join us in September 2021. Take a look at courses starting in January 2021.
To defer your application, please email email@example.com. If you defer your start date, you're still guaranteed a place as long as you meet all your conditions subject to course capacity and any course and entry requirements changes.
We are aware that different examination boards and countries are taking different approaches to exams. We'll look at this on a country by country basis. In some countries, such as the UK, the A level and IB Boards are assessing the students on the basis of achievement so far, and will provide an appropriate grade for them. In such a case we would accept the official results from the relevant examination board or examination authority in your country. We're also working to better understand the impact not being able to attend school or college may have on your grades.
We can accept final certificates, final transcripts or an official school/institution letter. Results must be confirmed and not provisional in order for us to accept you.

You'll be offered a guaranteed room in halls if you apply for accommodation as a new full-time undergraduate student who is starting in September 2021 and make us your firm, first choice before 30 June.
If you've applied for a postgraduate course that requires an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate, please ensure you have a valid certificate when it comes to your visa application. You should apply for your ATAS certificate as soon as possible as the process can take at least 30 working days. You will need to send us your ATAS certificate as soon as you receive it as it is part of the conditions of your offer. Further information about ATAS can be found here.
