Urban Plastic waste is both a major environmental challenge and an opportunity to boost local economies through circular economy business, yet there is still lack of replicable solutions for local authorities and companies to follow.

The event will provide information about findings from the Interreg 2-seas Project, Plasticity, which aims to increase the rates of recycling of commercial urban plastic waste to 50%, with particular focus in adding value to local economies with the recycling of “lost plastics”; these are plastics, for instance plastic film, that despite being recyclable and abundant in common plastic waste - are not currently recycled due to technical and behavioural barriers not yet fully mapped.

The project started in 2019 and takes place in 4 cities in Belgium, France, The Netherland and the UK. Plasticity develops replicable strategies and solutions to increase plastic reuse and recycle in urban environments, from technical innovation in collection and processing to new business models that can help build a stronger urban recycling system. The project takes a supply chain perspective to ensure that plastic products are designed so they can be easily reused and recycled and made into new products and packaging and, with the support of local governments, ensure consistent recycling is met.

Some of the topics discussed will include the development of innovative sustainable logistics, linked to local lumping solutions at plastic reuse and refinery hubs, new business models and plastic products developed during the COVID-19 pandemics, the design of urban platforms to provide stakeholders with useful data in a systematic way, and findings about behavioural aspects that need to be addressed to “unlock” plastic recycling.
