The University of Portsmouth is launching a new initiative to build the smart, fast, sustainable and efficient transport systems of the future.
The Intelligent Transport Research Cluster brings together academics from across the University with businesses and innovators from across all areas of the transport sector to address the global challenges in land, marine and air transport systems.
Transportation is evolving quickly and it is essential to invest in and develop better solutions for the challenge of providing safe, efficient and sustainable transportation.
Driverless cars, drone deliveries, on-demand public transport, new data-driven mobility services requiring high-fidelity communication networks and sustainable transport systems built using novel light-weight materials and renewable energy sources are some of the ways set to revolutionise how we move people and goods around the world.
The Intelligent Transport Research Cluster is being launched at a special event on Thursday 13 June at the University of Portsmouth.
The event brings together academics, leading transportation organisations and business partners to discuss the challenges and solutions for the future of mobility. There will be keynote business speakers from the Department for Transport, Connected Places Catapult, NATS, Solent LEP, Southampton International Airport, Portsmouth International Port, Cubic Transport Systems, Ordnance Survey, Portsmouth City Council, Polaris Consulting Limited, Airbus, STS-Defence, L3 ASV, South Western Railway, Knowledge Transfer Network, and Mobeleo.
Professor Djamila Ouelhadj, Director of the Intelligent Transport Cluster, said: “The Intelligent Transport Cluster aims to achieve excellence in research and innovation, while creating significant impact on economic growth and creating safe and sustainable transport solutions fit for the cities of the future.
“Air Pollution is a serious problem in Portsmouth and the main pollutants that affect human health are principally the products of combustion from road traffic – mainly nitrogen dioxide. It is my ambition to work with business partners and Cluster academics to support plans to tackle air pollution and implement a car-free city.”
