A graduate of our BSc (Hons) Television and Broadcasting course, Jake Wiafe, has won a Bafta as part of the Little Dot Studios team for their short documentary Missed Call.

The 20-minute film, which can be watched on YouTube, is shot on an iPhone and tells the poignant story of a teenage boy, Jim, and his mother Victoria as they make the decision to contact the boy’s father, who vanished from their lives a decade earlier.

The small indie company won the Bafta in the Short Form Programme category against stiff competition from a raft of documentaries by the BBC.

Jake joined Little Dot Studios in 2017 and has been senior operations assistant on the ‘Real Stories’ documentary channel for the past year.

Jake was instrumental in the success of our Bafta-winning film Missed Call, preparing the film for release on to the platform, producing editorialised cut downs for Facebook and IGTV. He's a hugely talented member of the Owned Channel team and we’re extremely lucky to have him working at Little Dot Studios.

He's also stepped in front of the microphone to co-host the first ever 'Real Stories Podcast', during which he interviewed 'Real Stories' commissioner Adam Gee, and the director of Missed Call, Victoria Mapplebeck, who also played the mother in the film.

In her acceptance speech she said: “This was a tricky film, as you can see, because I'm both director and parent to the fantastic Jim, and that meant I needed ongoing support from this fantastic dream team of commissioners and editors and producers.

“I think it's proof – I hope the film is proof – that small is beautiful, because I shot the whole thing on [a] phone."

BSc (Hons) Television and Broadcasting course leader Charlie Watts said: “This is a lovely result for a very talented graduate, and it gives further validation of the quality teaching and learning that has taken place.”
