World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues and advocate against social stigma.

Starting university is an exciting but also a challenging experience - many students will be away from home for the first time, and in a new city. Our students’ wellbeing is important to us, and we’re here to help with the transition to university life, and beyond.

The help and support available to our students includes:

Welfare Walkabout

Each autumn around 100 members of University staff volunteer their time to visit all students in halls of residence, to see how they're settling in to university life, and offer information on where they can get support and advice.

Welcome Ambassadors programme

The award-winning Welcome Ambassadors scheme connects new students with others, under the guidance from a student ambassador who can answer any questions, and share their experience of getting used to university life. The scheme has been recognised by the UK Government as an example of national good practice.

What'sUp app

Through the What'sUp phone app, students can anonymously access safeguarding, wellbeing, and emotional health support from the University’s Student Wellbeing Service

Stressless programmes

To help students through deadlines and exam periods, the Students' Union Advice Service has put together a range of health and wellbeing resources to help students manage stress. This is supported by Sport & Recreation's Stressless activities to help students keep active, stay healthy and be happy.

Wellbeing Courses, Workshops and Events

Throughout the year the Student Wellbeing Service provides a range of events to help students with the challenges can face during their time at university, such as managing stress, worrying, or motivation.

There’s a wider range of other personal support available to students during their time at University.
