Sara's story

BA (Hons) Musical Theatre

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to sing. I’ve been writing songs since I was 10 with the aim to pursue it as a career, and although I really enjoyed writing in general, I wanted to study a performance degree.

When I was 16, I went to London with my mother to see “The Phantom of the Opera”, a musical that I have loved since the film came out in 2004. It was then that I fell in love with musical theatre performance and decided that was what I wanted to do at university, whilst writing my own music.

Since I came to the University of Portsmouth, I have learned how to be truly responsible and independent, because it was the first time I have lived so far away from my family. My confidence has also improved because I’ve been performing on stage more and met so many new people. I’ve constantly been encouraged to try new things that had never crossed my mind before, such as tap dancing and writing for theatre.

My goals changed while studying; I decided to pursue songwriting and popular music performance throughout my degree. I want to become a singer-songwriter, and I’m considering a Master’s programmes to help me secure a place in the music industry. I’ve also written a poetry book with Olympia Publishers called Aches and Epiphanies, and I hope to experiment more with my writing style to publish more books.
