BA (Hons) Drama and Performance video submission

How to put together a video submission for your course application process

Please note

You only need a video submission if you're not attending the Drama and Performance workshop. You can find specific guidance for the workshop on the portfolio guides page.

Please record yourself answering the following questions, along with the performance of a two-minute monologue/scene and upload your video to YouTube or Vimeo so that we can get to know you better in considering your application to join one of our courses.

Keep in mind that there are no “right” answers; we just want to get a sense of how you think and feel about theatre.

Questions

  1. Why do you want to study drama and performance?
  2. Why study at the University of Portsmouth? Tell us what aspects of the course appeal to you and why. Try relating this to your future goals, current interests and areas, which will be a new challenge for you.
  3. Tell us about a recent theatrical production you have seen, and how this has influenced you. Try to discuss with us the various components that make up a production (such as set design and performances among others) and how they have affected the way an audience views and interprets the production.
  4. If you were asked to write an academic essay about the above theatrical production, what would the main theme of discussion be within your essay and why?

Monologue

Your two-minute monologue/scene should be from a play text written in the 21st Century (for example, plays by debbie tucker green, Luis Alfaro, Lynn Nottage, Samuel Beckett, Arthur Miller, Caryl Churchill, Sarah Kane, Mark Ravenhill, Laura Wade or Bryony Lavery).

Submit your video

Once you've recorded your video, please email the link along with your name and application ID to create.admissions@port.ac.uk.

The production value of the video doesn't need to be a professional standard. But you need to ensure the video resolution is high enough to be viewed on a PC and the sound quality is of a suitable standard. Please ensure the video is no longer than 10 minutes. Please remember to take your time and relax. We're looking for detailed answers to your questions rather than speedy replies.
