Plan your day around your course session

Our Applicant Experience Days aren't just about the course. We want to give you a whole rounded feel for the University and what it's like to be a student here.

We offer a number of tours throughout the day from campus walking tours to halls of residence tours. These all run from 9.30am to 3.30pm. There are no set times for these, and they run regularly throughout the day. Plan them in around your course talk.

Tours available

Campus tours

Some universities class themselves as campus universities whilst others describe themselves as city centre universities. City universities can often be quite spread out, meaning you have to walk a long time between lectures and some even call for public transport from building to building.

We're a city centre university with a campus feel – you'll understand this on one of our walking tours. All of our buildings are close to each other making walking to lectures a breeze.

Tours depart regularly from outside the Union building between 10.00am–3.00pm and last around 30–40 minutes. Our ambassadors will point out key buildings and information along the way.

If there's something you specifically want to know about, let your tour guide know.

Halls tours

Our accommodation tours, running between 10.00am–3.00pm, are one of the most popular activities of our Applicant Experience Days. It's your chance to see where you might be living next year.

Make your way to each halls of residence where our ambassadors will be waiting to give you a tour of a standard room and kitchen. You'll discover lots of useful information about each hall based on our students' experiences, including the do's and don'ts of living in halls, what to bring, and how to decorate.
You can see as many or as few as you like. Tours last around 2030 minutes.

The halls open to view will be:

  • Catherine House
  • Greetham Street
  • Harry Law
  • Margaret Rule
  • Trafalgar
  • Rosalind Franklin
  • Rees

Take a look at our halls to decide which one you'd like to visit on the day.

Library tours

The University Library is usually where students spend most of their time. It's the perfect place to go between lectures to get a bit of work done and a good meeting place for group work. It houses over 380,000 books alongside electronic resources, journals and more.

As you'll be likely to spend a lot of time here, it's important that you visit it on the Applicant Experience Day.

Make your way over to the library and ask the staff inside for more information. They'll be happy to talk you through the resources we offer students and the different facilities available.

In addition to the study spaces in the library, many of our faculty buildings also have open access spaces where you can use computers and laptops. If you want to know more or see these open access areas, ask a member of staff from your course talk or faculty information fair.

Gym tours

At Portsmouth, it's easy to live a healthy lifestyle. We know everyone enjoys different types of exercise. For you, that might mean going for an afternoon stroll along the beach, working on your core with Pilates, lifting weights at the gym to beat your PB or playing sport in a team. Whatever it is, Portsmouth has the facilities for you.

If you are interested in knowing more about the sports facilities here at the University then pop into our Spinnaker Sports centre. You can have a 30 minute tour of the sports centre which is where our sports hall, gym class rooms and squash courts are located, as well as our gym located in a separate building.

You can also ask the staff here or at the Information Fair about competitive sports societies and how to join and our new sports centre.
