Overview
This course is ideal for you if you’re a health and safety manager, officer and adviser, or if you’re looking to work at a senior level within health and safety. This course is particularly useful if you want to gain Chartered Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
This diploma was developed from a practitioner’s view and is underpinned by business experiences to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to become a proficient health and safety practitioner.
Once you complete this course you’ll meet the entry requirements for postgraduate programmes such as MSc Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management and be able to apply for Graduate membership of IOSH (GradIOSH) or work towards Chartered status (CMIOSH).

What you'll experience

Modules you'll study include:
Module 1 – Health & Safety Law
You'll study an introduction to legal requirements and the standards for health, safety and risk management across a range of workplaces. You'll focus on interpreting EU/UK health and safety law and the developing of the core legal knowledge and understanding required for you to provide professional advice on compliance and complete practical workplace applications.
Module 2 – Managing Physical Hazards in the Workplace
You'll cover safety issues in the workplace and focus on the technical aspects of hazard management. Common workplace ‘physical’ risks such as fire, construction, machinery, electricity and hazardous processes will be examined. You'll also study related topics such as structural safety and reliability with links to EU/UK legislation and standards.
Module 3 – Managing Health and Hygiene in the Workplace
On this module you'll cover the principles of occupational health and hygiene recognition, assessment, evaluation and control. You'll apply these topics to biological, chemical, physical, and psycho-social agents. You'll also explore related ergonomics risks using real life situations. You'll recognise and assess any potential harm from these agents and ergonomic risks, as well as assessing and evaluating appropriate control strategies, such as monitoring and reviewing risks.
Module 4 – Health and Safety Management
This module provides a framework for health and safety management based upon the new ISO45001 standard. You'll cover topics including health and safety policy, monitoring, planning and implantation, and review. You'll also develop practitioner skills such as the capacity to conduct thorough accident investigations, carry out risk assessments using a variety of different tools and make effective presentations to senior management. This module is set in the context of ‘commercial reality’, where your ability to present a business case for health and safety is developed.
Module 5 – Risk Management
This module expands the traditional scope of a health and safety practitioners’ knowledge and understanding by assessing and evaluating relevant and related contemporary risks. This includes risks associated with security, environment, food hygiene, and product liability. You'll explore the role of the health and safety practitioner with particular respect to strategic influence and corporate governance and develop your analytical and team work skills as well as strategic understanding. You will analyse the risk of issues in a selected case study and present a plan to manage the risks cost effectively to a mock Board of Directors.
How you're assessed
This course focuses on project work, oral assessments and assessed assignments.
Modules 1-4 are each assessed by a 2000 word assignment. Module 5 is assessed through your work-based project and a 15 minute presentation.
Entry requirements
You must hold a qualification in health and safety at at least level 3 to take this course, such as the Certificate of Credit in Health & Safety Management or the NEBOSH General Certificate.
