National Certificate in Environmental Management

Overview

Environmental management is essential for the protection of the planet, and therefore our future. It's essential that employers do their bit to reduce their environmental impact.

Equipped with the National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Certificate in Environmental Management, you can help your employer to avoid prosecution, litigation and loss of reputation.

This course focuses on UK law and environmental management systems, and is ideal for managers, supervisors and employees with responsibility for managing environmental issues as part of their day-to day duties. This certificate can also be a useful stepping stone towards achieving the professional level Environmental Diploma.

NEBOSH research shows around two-thirds of health and safety management positions at work also feature responsibility for environmental management. It may be useful to combine one of the health and safety qualifications above with this Environmental Certificate.

Course details

Structure

  • Mode of study: Direct, on campus learning through lectures and group work
  • Duration: 6 weeks, 1 day per week TBC
  • Start dates: 30 July 2020

What you'll experience

On this short course you'll:

  • Work to a syllabus mapped to both the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by Proskills and the Fire Safety NOS owned by SkillsPlus
  • Cover topics such as:
    • Environmental Management Systems (ISO14001) and aspect identification
    • Sources and use of energy and energy efficiency
    • Control of pollution
    • Planning for and dealing with environmental emergencies
  • Learn how to carry out an environmental review of your workplace and produce a report covering your results and recommendations

How you're assessed

While assessments will vary depending on you and the other institutions involved, you should plan for a minimum of 37 hours of teaching, and around 33 hours of private study and background reading.

You'll be assessed in a number of ways over the course of this study, including:

  • a 2-hour written examination, consisting of 10 'short answer' questions, and one 'long answer' question (Unit EC1) 
  • the completion of an environmental review of a workplace or organisation, followed by an action plan designed to improve environmental performance (Unit EC2) 

Your written assessments will be marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH, while your practical assessments will be marked by us and externally moderated by NEBOSH.

You'll get a unit certificate for the successful completion of each unit and a qualification parchment upon successful completion of both units.
