As an international or EU student at Portsmouth, you can access many scholarships. Your eligibility for these scholarships varies depending on which course you're studying, where you're from and your academic achievement to date.

Here's a summary of the scholarships you can access if you choose to start studying with us from September 2020:

University of Portsmouth International Scholarships

Vice Chancellor's Global Development Scholarship

For September 2020 entry onwards, eligible students will be able to receive the Vice Chancellor's Global Development Scholarship. This scholarship will take the form of a £1,600 fee reduction that will apply to your first year of study.

Terms and Conditions for Vice Chancellor's Global Development Scholarship

  • If you're studying an undergraduate course, you must be a self-funded student on a full-time, on campus, course with annual fees of £14,300 or above for 2020 entry.
  • If you're studying on a postgraduate research or postgraduate taught course, you must be a self-funded student on a full-time, on campus, course with annual fees of £14,300 or above for 2020 entry.
  • The scholarship is not available for students who have previously studied other courses at the University of Portsmouth, who will instead be allocated the alumni discount.
  • The scholarship is available for ICP (International College Portsmouth) students progressing to the University
  • The scholarship will take the form of a £1,600 fee reduction, effective at the time of registration and will only apply to your first year of study.
  • The scholarship cannot be combined with any other scholarship, discount or fee offer.
  • The discounted fee will be stated on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS). This is the final document you receive when you have an unconditional offer to study at the University of Portsmouth and have paid your deposit.
  • Only applicants who have been assessed as overseas students for tuition fee purposes can access this scholarship. Eligibility is determined by nationality.

Chancellor's Global Academic Merit Scholarship

For September 2020 entry onwards eligible applicants will be considered for the Chancellors Global Academic Merit Scholarship. This scholarship will take the form of a £5,000 fee reduction that will apply to your first year of study. This scholarship is merit based and applicants would need to have met all their offer conditions by 1st June 2020 (for September 2020 entry). Applications will then be considered by the University's scholarship panel and the successful candidates will be contacted to confirm their status.

School of the Environment, Geography and Geosciences (SEGG) Scholarship

If you're a self-funded international student, achieve a first or upper second (2:1) from your Bachelor's degree at the University of Portsmouth and accept an offer onto a Master's course before Monday 6th July 2020, you could get 50% off your course tuition fee with our Master's Scholarship.

Eligibility

To be considered for this Master’s Scholarship you must be a self-funding international student and:

  • Accept an offer on a full-time masters programme listed below before Monday 6th July 2020, to commence in September 2020
  • Achieve a first or upper second (2:1) honours degree from your University of Portsmouth undergraduate programme

How to apply

You do not need to make a separate application. Candidates holding a 2:1 or 1st will automatically be considered and the decision will be made based on the highest GPA score who fulfill the above criteria. If you're one of the three successful candidates, you'll be informed by Tuesday 7th July 2020.

Faculty of Business and Law Postgraduate Scholarship

If you're a student from the European Union (EU) joining our Faculty of Business and Law on a full-time or part-time postgraduate course, you may be eligible for a 40% discount on your tuition fees.

You can apply to be considered for the scholarship if:

  • You're fully self-funded
  • You have UK or EU nationality
  • You've been offered a place on a campus-based full or part-time 180 credit postgraduate course, excluding distance learning or 'top-up' courses
  • You've achieved, or are predicted to achieve, a 2:1 from your undergraduate degree, or have significant, relevant managerial or professional work experience (if you're awarded a scholarship but don't achieve a 2:1 when you get your results, you won't be eligible)
  • You haven't started your postgraduate course at the University of Portsmouth

You must apply for this scholarship before you start your course.

You can't combine this award with any other University discount or bursary.

SQA Advanced Diploma Scholarship

The Advanced Diploma Scholarship from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is worth £2,000 to £3,000. You can apply for this scholarship if you meet the following conditions:

  • You're a Chinese mainland student
  • You will graduate in 2021
  • You've firmly accepted an unconditional or conditional offer with us
  • You've achieved, or are predicted to achieve, a general Graded Unit of A (i.e. AAA or AA) with no subject grade below 60 from your academic studies or you have significant, relevant social practices experience, or managerial or professional work experience
  • You've achieved English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0
  • You haven't yet started your postgraduate course with us

You must apply for this scholarship before you start your course. Applications are open from May 15 2020 - June 15 2020.

If your application is successful, we’ll assess your application and grades against other applications to decide the scholarship amount you’ll be granted. Your scholarship amount will be automatically discounted from your tuition fee at the start of your course.

External Scholarships

Chevening Scholarship

Chevening is the UK Government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders.

Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers an opportunity for future leaders and influencers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

These highly coveted scholarships are awarded to outstanding scholars with leadership potential. Awards are typically for a 1-year Master’s degree in any subject.

Commonwealth Scholarship

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) gives scholarships to students from the Commonwealth. These scholarships aim to attract outstanding talent to British universities and to combine sustainable development with the UK national interest.

Scholarships reward merit and promote equity, inclusion and access to education, especially to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship 2020

If you’re a student from an eligible commonwealth country wishing to study MSc International Development by Distance Learning. You can apply for the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship 2020. Which would cover all elements of the course fees. You can apply to be considered for the scholarship if:

  • You are a citizen of or be granted refugee status from an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
  • Permanently and continually resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) standard. A lower qualification and sufficient relevant experience may be considered in certain cases
  • Can provide at least one reference
  • Hold an offer to start MSc International Development (by Distance Learning) for 2020

Your application must be submitted by midday 16:00 PM (GMT) on 4 May 2020 and all references must be submitted by 16:00 PM (GMT) on 22 May 2020.
