Applications are invited for a funded three-year PhD in the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries to commence in October 2021.

The University of Portsmouth is investing in a number of funded PhD bursaries that underpin our commitment to our research base and the impact our research makes. In the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, we value PhD proposals that are aligned with one or more of the specialist areas of expertise within the four schools of the faculty. There are various models of PhD research we can support including PhD by practice projects. We welcome a range of research methods and we are especially keen to support interdisciplinary projects that involve more than one of the specialist research areas in the faculty.

Applicants should use the website links listed above to explore the available expertise and to tailor a specific topic for a proposal that fits with that expertise. You are encouraged to contact potential supervisors with a brief overview of a proposed topic before submitting a formal application. Our Department Research Degree Coordinators (emails listed above), can help to put you in touch with appropriate supervisors.

Eligibility and funding

The bursaries are available to UK and EU students and cover tuition fees and an annual maintenance grant in line with the UKRI rate (£15,609 for 2021/22). A fees-only offer may also be made.

International candidates may be eligible to compete for a Portsmouth Global PhD scholarship. Successful candidates will receive a scholarship to cover tuition fees at an international rate for three years, a stipend in line with the UKRI rate (£15,609 for 2021/22), and one return flight to London during the duration of the course.

How to apply

Make sure that you meet our entry requirements. As a general rule, you’ll need a good first degree from an internationally recognised university (depending upon chosen course, minimum upper second class or equivalent) and a Master’s degree in an appropriate subject. Exceptionally, equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications will be considered. English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0.

Discuss your own research idea and find out more about postgraduate programmes in the schools of the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries by contacting the Department Research Degrees Coordinator (see above). A university supervisor needs to support any funding application.

Write up a short research proposal (2000 words), providing the background to the proposed research, and an outline of the studies. The proposed research should relate to one or more of the above research areas. It is essential to contact potential supervisors for your research before submitting your application so that you can develop your research ideas with them.
