This intensive short course is for you if you have existing drama experience and are aiming to develop practical skills, prepare for auditions or apply to Drama Schools.

This 4-day course is a practical acting skills development opportunity in our drama studios. You'll study your surroundings, the dynamics of nature and space and the human body to help you tell interesting stories. On this course, you'll focus on the idea of using the body and voice as tools for creating meaningful performances. On the final day, you'll take part in an informal sharing of your work.

What you'll experience

On this short course, you'll:

  • Experience voice, movement, delivery of text, ease and confidence in speaking to an audience
  • Learn warm-up exercises that participants would experience in a rehearsal room
  • Develop acting techniques, including a practical workshop based on a Stanislavskian approach to acting or Emma Rice's actor-as-storyteller
  • Take part in movement work based on the teaching practice on Jacques Lecoq and Phillipe Gaulier
  • Explore voice work, such as breath, sound, resonation, articulation and making meaning


The course is run by Ian Nicholson, a freelance director based in London and Portsmouth.

Ian trained as a director at the National Theatre, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and École Philippe Gaulier. He was Associate Director for the National Theatre on "we're here because we're here", created by Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller, and Rufus Norris.

Ian has worked as a director for Nuffield Southampton Theatres, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, The Unicorn Theatre, and Royal and Derngate Northampton, among others. He has previously taught at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, LIPA, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and East 15.

Entry requirements

You need to be 17 or older to take part in this course. There are no other entry requirements.
