If you want to learn more about autism, work in the field, or better understand how to help someone with the condition, this is the course for you.
Over 12 weeks, you'll get a deeper understanding of autism spectrum conditions across health, education, culture and the media. You'll explore the therapies available, and address the supportive and enabling therapeutics in development.
You'll learn under the guidance of Dr Beatriz Lopez, Reader in Psychology.

What you'll experience
On this short course, you'll cover:
- Autistic spectrum conditions and key issues when providing support for both people with these conditions and their families
- Autistic spectrum conditions in social-economic and cultural contexts and interventions
- Therapy for persons with autistic spectrum conditions
You'll learn about autism spectrum conditions in contexts such as health, education, the economy, culture and the media.
Teaching
You'll be taught by Dr Beatriz López, the lead of the Autism Centre for Research on Employment and founder of the Autism Research Network.
Beatriz has conducted academic research on autism for over twenty years. Her recent work is aimed to close the gap between research and practice by working in close collaboration with local authorities, charities and the autism community.
On this course you'll learn through our Virtual Learning environment where you'll have access to all the materials you need and direct contact with tutors.
How you'll spend your time
Students will actively engage in online debates and complete writing and reflection tasks to critique current research evidence. You will also spend time reading course materials and additional research sources, and answering questions regarding linked texts.
What's included
You'll get written course material, video clips and access to plenty of resources, including e-journal articles and e-books, via the University of Portsmouth Library.
How you're assessed
You'll produce two assessments, to achieve 30 Level M Credits. You'll be assessed through:
- An oral presentation consisting of slides with embedded audio-recording to assess the ability to translate research knowledge into effective training of lay audiences.
- Writing an essay exploring differing conceptions, or therapy, of Autism Spectrum Conditions
You'll submit assignments online through Moodle, our Virtual Learning Environment
Entry requirements
Undergraduate degree or professional experience in a related discipline such as psychology or social work.
