Our Gold rating in the Government-backed Teaching Excellence Framework scheme (TEF) means our teaching, learning and student outcomes are outstanding and among the highest quality in the UK.
Our expert lecturers have years of experience. Many are active in their professions and continuously developing their knowledge, keeping you at the forefront of your chosen subject.
You’ll learn relevant, up-to-date skills from them so you can hit the ground running in your future career.
Latest research and theories
The majority of our research is world leading and internationally excellent. That’s according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF), which assesses the quality of research in UK universities.
Our research feeds directly into our courses. You'll be exploring the latest theories and developing original ideas as part of your studies.
We involve employers and professional bodies in developing course content. So everything you learn will be relevant to your career when you graduate.
Many of our courses are accredited or validated by professional organisations. These organisations make sure these courses give you the relevant skills and abilities to work in the industry.
Many of our degrees also allow you to achieve chartered status or other professional qualifications faster. This can supercharge your career prospects and help you stand out from the crowd.
Real-life learning environments
It's not all classrooms and textbooks. At Portsmouth, you can apply what you learn in simulated work environments.
Law students practise their skills in our replica court, while students from disciplines such as criminology and social work can experience being an expert witness in a simulated legal case.
Other simulated environments include:
- a 25-seat newsroom for journalism students
- the Bloomberg Suite, which gives you access to the same data and analytics software that city traders use
- the Centre for Simulation in Health and Care, which includes a simulated GP surgery, care home, 1-bedroom flat, ambulance and 2 acute hospital training wards
You can apply your skills in the local community too. For instance, dental students treat NHS patients in our Dental Academy and sport and exercise science students run coaching courses at local schools.
Work experience and career planning
Our Careers and Employability service supports you during your studies and for 5 years after you graduate. This gives you the best start after you finish studying with us. Our Careers Service was voted in the Top 20 in the country (Student Crowd, 2017).
As well as helping you on the first steps of your career, we'll support you in:
