Biography

I came to University of Portsmouth in 2005, after teaching English and Media Studies at the universities of Glasgow and Lancaster and working in the public sector in the late 1990s. I take an interdisciplinary approach to Media Studies, combining interests in media, politics, critical theory and textual analysis. In addition to my academic writing, I write for a range of popular publications and I maintain a media review blog.

Research interests

My research focuses on the representation of political and social issues in television and film. I have published widely on a range of subjects within film, television and media studies, but my principal interests include television and film images of war and geopolitics, the mediation of mental distress, and critical theory.
