Summary

I am a Lecturer in Architecture (Culture and Context) at the University of Portsmouth's School of Architecture, Art and Design. My work sits at the intersection of architectural education, digital pedagogy, and cultural theory, with a particular focus on how virtual and hybrid design studio environments shape studio culture, collaboration, and the student learning experience.

I completed my PhD at Portsmouth in 2025, exploring the impacts of Hybrid Flexible Virtual Design Studios in architecture education. This research now directly informs aspects of my teaching practice, alongside a visual design background that underpins the way I approach teaching delivery, with a strong emphasis on clear, engaging visual presentation.

I have previously contributed to publications to work on digital learning environments in architecture, and I am currently developing several publications from my doctoral research. I hold Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Biography

I completed my BA, MArch, and PhD in Architecture at the University of Portsmouth, punctuated by periods in architectural practice and creative work. I joined the University as a Demonstrator in 2019, alongside my MArch studies, and have taught on the Architecture and Interior Architecture and Design programmes ever since, progressing to Sessional Teaching Fellow and, most recently, becoming a Lecturer.

Research interests

My research focuses on the cultural dynamics of architectural education – specifically, how digital and hybrid learning environments influence studio culture, pedagogy, and collaborative practice. I am interested in the human and social dimensions of the design studio as a learning space, and in how emerging digital spaces can be designed to preserve and enrich those qualities.

More broadly, my architectural interests centre on the humanistic, social, and cultural qualities of the built environment – the ways in which buildings and spaces reflect, shape, and respond to the communities that inhabit them.

Research areas include: virtual and hybrid design studio frameworks; studio culture in architecture education; digital tools and sustainable design pedagogy; and cultural dimensions of the built environment.
