Biography

I am an artist, illustrator, independent publisher and educator whose research is rooted in practice-based enquiry across illustration, drawing, animation and artists’ books. My work investigates how material processes, small-press publishing and hand-made book forms can function as sites for narrative experimentation, collaboration and critical reflection within contemporary illustration practice.

Research interests

Central to my research is Micro Library Books, a small-press publishing platform I founded in 2012 that produces pocket-sized, limited-edition artists’ books. This ongoing project operates as both creative output and research method, exploring scale, tactility, distribution, and the book as an intimate, portable exhibition space. These works are frequently co-created, exhibited internationally, and used as case studies in practice-led research into the pedagogic and communicative potential of artists’ publishing.

I contribute to teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate illustration, embedding drawing as a research method and artists’ publishing as a critical studio practice. I co-manage the University of Portsmouth’s Ministry of Books artists’ books archive, supporting cross-disciplinary student engagement with historical and contemporary book arts.

My research activity encompasses illustration practice, drawing as research method, and the artist’s book as a vehicle for material and conceptual enquiry. I have presented papers and posters at international illustration symposia including Apparatus: The Role of Technology in Illustration (15th International Illustration Research Symposium) and the Illustration and the Paper Artefact poster at Falmouth University, and regularly contribute to research outputs integrating creative artefacts and exhibition-based projects.

My practice includes co-founding the arts collective Borbonesa, curating artists’ book exhibitions, facilitating community arts and wellbeing programmes, and lecturing for galleries and cultural institutions.

Teaching responsibilities

I joined the BA (Hons) Illustration course at the University of Portsmouth in 2018, where I teach across Levels 4 to 6 and contribute to studio-based learning, seminars and workshops. I coordinate Level 5 modules Professional Skills Development and Book Arts. Within the School, I co-manage the Ministry of Books - a unique artists’ books archive and collection that supports student research and practice across disciplines.
