Biography

I am an applied social anthropologist working on generating evidence to support an end to violence against women and girls. I work across South Asia (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, India and Nepal), Africa (Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and Sierra Leone) and the UK. I have directed a number of externally funded research projects on Women, Work and Violence and Women, Violence and Displacement in South Asia. In Sudan I have worked as part of the Free Sudan from FGM programme. In South Sudan I have a project looking at how resilience and social exclusion can be better understood through an art heritage approach. In India I have conducted research on rape and dowry harrassment. In the UK I run projects documenting the life experiences of South Asian and African women in my local communities.

My research is funded by the ESRC, AHRC, British Academy, EU, Home Office and DFID.

I have published 4 monographs, 2 edited volumes and a number of artilces. My most recent volume is titled 'Global Perspectives on Violence against Women and Girls' (2020 Zed Press).
