Lina Lu - Breathe with the Tide

Project Overview

Breathe with the Tide is a health and wellbeing community centre on the Portsmouth coast, close to Eastney and Fort Cumberland. It is designed for people who may find traditional care settings overwhelming, including neurodivergent users and those needing support with health, mental wellbeing, or short‑term recovery.

A tiered coastal building with terraces overlooking the sea at sunset, with people sitting, standing, and walking across the ramps and platforms.

Design Concept

The project uses the tide as a guiding metaphor, shaping a journey from exposure to shelter. The architecture encourages gradual engagement with the sea through framed views, sheltered pathways, and reflected natural light.

A multi‑level interior with wide staircases and natural light from skylights, with people moving through the open space.
A circular interior space with a reflective ceiling feature, supported by columns, with people reclining on lounge chairs around the room.

Spatial Organisation

Public and social spaces are positioned near the building’s entrance, while quieter, more restorative recovery areas are located deeper inside, offering increasing levels of calm and protection.

Material and Atmosphere

The design presents care as a gentle spatial experience. Protective materials like concrete are paired with warmer interior finishes, water elements, and soft light to create a slow, restorative environment.
