Lucy Dollery - Mirrors

Project overview

Mirrors, a reflection on identity and inheritance, a quiet love letter to my parents. Throughout ‘Mirrors’ I place myself in dialogue with archival images of my mother and father, mirroring their presence throughout gestures, expressions and gazes. These images are not an attempt at recreation or accuracy but instead, are an act of comparison.

Five people gather closely in a warm indoor setting, some holding drinks, with one person playfully gesturing toward the camera as the group poses together.
Four people stand close together indoors, dressed for a social occasion, with one holding a drink. A landscape painting and a string of small lights hang on the wall behind them

A dialogue across generations

‘Mirrors’ is a consideration of what it means to be shaped by the ongoing love that existed before us, using myself as physical evidence of a connection that stretches across generations, where the past continues to mirror within the present. I explore my own connection to my parents, sharing small highlights through my fathers strong presence, in relation to my mothers quiet absence.

Continuation and Reinterpretation

Mirrors shares the comforting yet intimidating feeling that I am both a continuation and reinterpretation of my parents lives, after all, I am them.
