Celebrating Contemporary Cultural Dress

Kin is a collection of portraits celebrating the rich vibrancy of modern cultural clothing within the African continent. While creating a space for people to experience how diverse cultures are expressed and remembered today.

A person wearing elegant West African‑influenced ceremonial clothing stands against a warm floral backdrop, with a bright headwrap, coral‑style beads, and a horsetail whisk, expressing cultural pride and identity.
A person wearing bright, patterned ceremonial clothing stands against a textured backdrop, with a matching headwrap, layered fabrics, and jewellery, expressing individuality and cultural identity.

Identity, Heritage, and Continuity

Inspired by my mixed African-Caribbean background, Kin reflects on the relationship between personal identity and culture. The series honours the beauty, individuality, and ongoing evolution of African cultural expression. Despite the oppression of colonialism, many African cultures have continued to preserve their traditional dress throughout generations.

A person wearing ornate ceremonial clothing stands against a floral backdrop, with a large circular headpiece, patterned red‑and‑white garments, long braids, and jewellery, expressing individuality and cultural identity.
A person stands against a bright orange backdrop wearing a red patterned garment, layered beaded jewellery, white face paint, and an afro hairstyle, expressing individuality and cultural identity.

Resilience and Evolving Community

Kin celebrate the resilience of cultural identity through people’s individuality. African culture is not something fixed in the past, but continually evolves and is connected to communities. Kin’s goal is not only to connect people through identity but also to represent a family beyond blood relations.
