Project overview

Mother–Daughter Relationships

Mother-daughter relationships are one of the most complicated familial relationships to exist.

A person takes a mirror selfie indoors, wearing a black leather jacket, black outfit and dark tights, holding a phone with one hand and the other in a pocket. Sunglasses rest on their head, with coats hanging in the background.
A person stands outdoors wearing a white ruffled gown and holding a small bouquet of pink flowers, with a white headpiece and greenery behind them.

Comme Ci Comme Ça

Comme Ci Comme Ça represents my relationship with my mother, demonstrated through contemporary imagery taken by the pair of us, blended with archival footage, allowing the work to take shape, change, and evolve as much as my relationship with my mother has, creating a real-time representation of how our relationship functions and how we see each other.

Two people sit close together inside a wooden interior; one leans their head on the other’s shoulder as both smile, with tables, beams and a yellow balloon visible in the background.
A pair of bare feet rest on a surface covered in small pebbles or shell fragments, creating a rough, textured ground in an outdoor setting.

Like This, Like That

Comme Ci Comme Ça is a French phrase meaning ‘like this, like that’, and exists as a metaphor for a few things: first how the nature of the relationship exists outside your average mother-daughter relationship, while representing the shared experience of being a woman, seeking comfort in each other, but also how you can change, evolve, and live your own experiences, becoming your own individual that is similar, but separate, from your mother.

A person with long hair stands indoors wearing glasses on their head and a dark shirt, lit by an overhead ceiling light with a doorway and signage visible behind them.
A person sits indoors with long light‑brown hair, covering their face with both hands. A floral patterned wall and a dark curtain form the background.
