Counter Fraud, Cybercrime and Forensic Accounting Conference was hosted for the first time by the Centre for Cybercrime and Economic Crime
The 12th Counter Fraud, Cybercrime and Forensic Accounting Conference which took place on 14th and 15th June 2023 was hosted for the first time by the Centre for Cybercrime and Economic Crime and was a huge success, welcoming over 300 in-person and online delegates from across the globe, with over 50 speakers sharing their research and expertise. Over 60 organisations were represented, including higher education, banking and financial services, government agencies, law enforcement, crime prevention, technology, research, insurance and loss adjusting, accounting, law and auditing.
The full programme of speakers is available to view here, with selected highlights including a keynote speech on ransomware by Professor David Wall (University of Leeds), Abigail Bishop (Amazon) discussing how to protect consumers from impersonation scams and Jemima Murray (Home Office) on the government’s fraud strategy. The conference also included expert speakers from organisations such as NFU Mutual, the Police Foundation, the Public Sector Fraud Authority, the Centre for Global Advancement and Perpetuity Research, contributing to sessions on romance fraud, financial technology and AI, corporate fraud and forensic accounting, modern challenges of fraud, crypto assets and crime, and technology and investigations. The conference also included a panel discussing the Online Safety Bill and another on romance fraud featuring Cecilie Fjellhøy, star of the Netflix documentary The Tinder Swindler, among others.
Special event
The conference also included a special event to celebrate the launch of the Centre, with a presentation from co-Directors Professor Mark Button and Dr Vasileios Karagiannopoulos, speeches by Professor Anne Murphy, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Paul Hayes, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and Mark Cheeseman OBE, CEO of the Public Sector Fraud Authority, and a guest lecture exploring the consequences for victims of economic cybercrime by Professor Tom Holt of Michigan State University, followed by a drinks reception.
