Shahriar Hossain is an environmental scientist, journalist and social researcher whose work bridges science, policy and public advocacy.
He began his academic journey at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, and has held teaching and research positions at leading institutions in South Asia, Europe and the United States, including Jawaharlal Nehru University, the University of Bath, the University of Dhaka, and George Washington and Georgetown Universities.
His research focuses on the ecological and human health impacts of plastic pollution and toxic chemical exposure, with a long-standing commitment to advancing sustainable policy solutions.
Dr. Hossain played a leading role in Bangladesh’s pioneering movement to ban thin plastic bags, an achievement that has influenced global conversations on plastic regulation.
Recognised internationally, he has received the Environmental Leadership Award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency and is an Ashoka Fellow.
Alongside his academic work, he is an active public voice, writing extensively on environmental governance, waste management and public health in the Global South.
His work reflects an ongoing commitment to environmental justice, scientific integrity and responsibility to future generations.
