Lights, cameras, creativity - graduates from the University of Portsmouth’s School of Film, Media & Creative Technologies have taken their work to one of the UK’s most iconic film venues. Showcasing their films at BFI Southbank, the annual graduation screening celebrated the talent, innovation and ambition of the next generation of filmmakers, screenwriters and post-production specialists as they prepare to make their mark on the industry.

Celebrating the next generation of filmmakers

The event brought together graduating students from the university’s BA Film Production, BA Post-Production and BA Screenwriting programmes, giving them the opportunity to showcase their work in front of industry professionals, successful alumni, academics and supporters.

Screening at BFI Southbank provided students with a professional exhibition experience in one of the UK’s most widely recognised organisation for film culture, preservation and education. Placing their films alongside the wider landscape of British cinema helped students to celebrate the quality of work emerging from Portsmouth.

Students worked in large interdisciplinary teams, combining specialist skills across directing, cinematography, editing, sound, visual effects, screenwriting and production management.

A showcase built around creativity and industry experience

Over the past decade, the showcase has become an important platform for graduates to share their work, build industry connections and celebrate the culmination of years of creative and technical development. Each graduating cohort also creates its own showcase identity, developing a unique event name and poster artwork that reflects its creative character and vision.

The BFI showcase represents far more than a graduation screening. It provides our students with the opportunity to experience their work in a professional exhibition environment and to celebrate the culmination of creative and technical development. For many graduates, having a film screened at the BFI becomes a significant milestone as they transition into professional practice

Innovation, collaboration and life after graduating

This year’s films demonstrated the breadth of talent across the graduating cohort, exploring thought-provoking social and cultural themes alongside technically ambitious productions.

Projects examined subjects including the long-term effects of PTSD among Falklands War veterans and contemporary perspectives on gender and family relationships, showcasing the ability of students to use storytelling to engage with complex issues.

One of the standout projects was Somnus 4076, created using Unreal Engine and motion-capture technology. The project demonstrated how students are embracing new approaches to production through the University’s investment in creative innovation, including the Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality (CCIXR).

Beyond celebrating student achievement, the BFI showcase continues to open doors for graduates by connecting them with industry guests, alumni and professional networks. Previous student films have gone on to achieve festival screenings, awards and wider recognition, demonstrating the impact of providing emerging filmmakers with a platform at such an early stage of their careers.

As a new generation of filmmakers, screenwriters and post-production specialists prepare to enter the industry, the BFI showcase remains a powerful reflection of the creativity, professionalism and innovation coming from the University of Portsmouth’s School of Film, Media & Creative Technologies.
